About Me
I'm a newbie, still working on this.
I'm Looking For
People who work with food, people who give good book recommendations, people who like to travel and will share their travel tips.
My Interests
food, books, travel, jewelry, games
Music
Right now I have Amy Winehouse on repeat but I like most all kinds of music (including country and rap). The only thing I really dislike is weird whiny indie stuff (ie Built to Spill).
Movies
My favorite director is Martin Scorsese and I love everything I've seen of his - including the earlier works like Taxi Driver and Mean Streets - but my favorites are Gangs of New York and The Departed. Another favorite is Respiro - an amazing Italian movie about family, community, and mental illness that's set in a small fishing village.
Television
The Office, South Park, Jeopardy, an occasional episode of My Super Sweet 16 or What Not to Wear....
Books
I love food writing, especially MFK Fisher and Jeffrey Steingarten, but also Elizabeth David, Ruth Reichl, etc. I have a little cookbook fetish and right now my collection includes Marion Cunningham's Fannie Farmer Cookbook, Feasting Galore Irish Style, Olney's The French Menu, Cucina di Calabria, Polish Cookery, and Mama Dip's Kitchen. I love obscure regional cookbooks - if you have any recommendations send them my way! Lately it's been hard to find the time for pleasure reading but old favorites include Elizabeth Gaskell, DH Lawrence, Joan Didion, Nadine Gordimer, Don Delillo, Wallace Stegner and Patrick Dennis. In general I like to read post-colonial fiction (of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean in particular), Victorian literature, and novels about the American West. One of the best books I've read recently is Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra - 800+ pages but worth it (though you might want to wait for the paperback - it's heavy to hold up in bed!). Currently I'm in the middle of Possession by AS Byatt, which is an intriguing story with lots of pretty words, but I'm finding it slow going.
Skills
I work as a grant and program adminstrator for the Food Program of a small non-profit that serves family farmers in California.
Ideal job
I enjoy my job but would really love to be gainfully self-employed in a related field.
