Our eyes, delicate creations which give us a window to the world.
Sight is such a powerful thing - which we want to protect and maintain to the highest standards.
I have just been notified by my online contact supplier (only because I put in an order) - that they no longer stock Amo Complete - as it has been removed from the shelves, no other details were given over email or the phone - I did ask.
As a curious person, I did a search on google, and found a recent press release by AMO (25th May) it has been removed from the shelves as a survey by the CDC had reported that there was a risk of at least 7 times greater to get a serious corneal infection, than those that did not use AMO Complete. I feel very worried that a product like this can still be used by custumers all over the world - 7times more at risk to getting a serious corneal infection. Even more worrying is the possible effects "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is concerned the solution may be a factor in a painful eye infection that can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. The C-D-C and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating 138 confirmed cases"
A while back RENU MoistureLoc Plus was recalled and removed from the shelves - this was announced worldwide - as a national of Ireland, we seen it in local and national papers, on the news, email from my supplier with an application to seek reimbursement from the manufacturer directly....
However, for the recall of AMO Complete - Ive seen nothing in Ireland? I find it worrying that if I had not put in another order, I would still continue to use this product that is now removed from the shelves. SHould consumer not be told about this, and allow them to make an informed choice of whether they would like to continue using the product they still have on their shelf.
I think Im lucky - I could have a 6 month order at home now, and be none the wise of this recall, until I go to re-order next year.... Is that fair?
I take my heath very seriously, and where a product has been recalled, I'd like to know about it, and why.... thats the least I'd expect.
"In response to information received today from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding eye infections from Acanthamoeba, a naturally occurring water-borne organism which can contribute to serious corneal infections, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) (NYSE:EYE) is immediately and voluntarily recalling its Complete® MoisturePlus(TM) contact lens solutions. CDC data was made available to AMO today showing that it had completed interviews with 46 patients who had developed Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) since January 2005. A total of 39 of these patients were soft contact lens wearers, 21 of whom reported using Complete® MoisturePlus(TM) products. The CDC estimates a risk of at least seven times greater for those who used Complete® MoisturePLUS(TM) solution versus those who did not."
