It is the website for a company that builds completely fanless PCs. I was curious as I have been intending to build one myself for some time.

There are difficulties with the concept, Processors inevitably run hotter and so will have a shorter lifespan, it also means that high end processors that have yet to be optimised run to hot to use at all, however it has one benefit... no fan noise!

But does this make such a difference? I have lived with a PC on in my Bedroom 24/7 for about 4 years now and I can't say my hearing is any worse... of course I have always worked hard to ensure that my PC is as quiet as possible. Infact what I find far more annoying than Fan sounds are the little whines the Disc Drives put out when they don't like you asking them to do stuff.

The actual reason I had intended to build a silent PC was for use as a home entertainment centre. It was to be much lower spec than those offered by this company, run off flash memory, connected to a network and as small as possible with the aim of having no moving parts at all, and get all the data off of a PC or server stored elsewhere in the house so at last music and movies would be completely free of the whirring of the disk and the hum of fans.


Anyway I guess in my opinion, as long as you are sensible and don't try to install 37 12" fans to drop the CPU temp that extra .5oC I don't think that fan noise is going to affect your hearing any worse than the traffic outside your window, but it does drive me NUTS when I am trying to enjoy Lord of the Rings in 5.1 surround sound, Or thte nuances of Holst's Planet Suite in my living room.


What do the rest of you think about fan noise? And the noise of technology in general?

As some of you may have noticed I have been on a quest to review as much of Woyano as possible and having read and rated some 1500 submissions I have found that a depressing number are simply BBC links... much as I love keeping up on news, I have other websites for that, I much prefer seeing people submit truly original articles for this reason I thought I'd draw particular focus to two members who have submitted their own stuff:

Arooka - For his tireless efforts to introduce Cannabis to every possible facet of life from petrol to clothes.

Starrman - I may not agree with his opinions but he has a lot of them! I'd love to see him develop and reason them a little more, but consistantley original content!

Every year I get near the exam period and put everything else on hold til the three weeks after the exams when we have to stay at university but with nothing to do. And yet somehow every year the exams finish and all of a sudden everything happens all at once! Since the exams have finished it has just been all go! Anyways for those of you with a bit of time to spare I thought I would list a few of the podcasts that I listen to:

If Channel 4 (or is it 5?) get their way, Diana (ok that may have been a little poor taste) I think the documentary needs to be shown, I think the case has not been presented to the public sufficiently and if the maers beleive that the photos are necessary in order to project their point of view then I would like to see it before condoning it.

 

Well now that I have well and truly dug myself a hole... I am indeed back, exams are over, resits are looking inevitable, but for now I am free to waste time on Woyano!

To the site managers: I love the new site it looks a lot more professional!

To everyone else a sneak peak at a few things I am planning on submitting in the next couple of weeks:

• More on my Guitar lessons as I further my knowledge and (hopefully) skill.
• How to build a BBQ from a Shopping Trolley (not that I condone the theft of shopping trolleys in any way shape or form!)
• A skin for the site
• How to turn a Desk into a Rat Cage (still a WIP)

 And of course I will be catching up on all the submissions everyone else has made!

 

Ok so I have been a little less active recently as my exams start next week and I am going to be revising my a55 off. So once they are done I have plenty more contributions to make including more on my Guitar lessons, some skins, Trolley Barbeques and a Desk pet cage!

Well I just checked my email and was astounded to see that the latest Woyano Newsletter included a special mention of me. What's more it seems I'm being thanked for making the Woyano Team's life as difficult as possible! Awesome! I will carry on doing my best to find everything that is wrong with the site, though I have to say it is getting harder and harder!
