I was watching a programme yesterday evening with Richard E Grant, and he was going on about his childhood and all that kind of stuff, but they got around to mentioning films he had been in, and when he mentioned Withnail & I it put a smile on my face.

Any comments about it...

What a film! Absolutely love it. A very British cult film though so not sure quite how many people saw it.

I had never even heard of this film before moving to the UK, and furthermore, I couldn't grasp the humor until I had seen it twice. I fell asleep the first time! This goes to show that even Americans born and raised on silliness and slapstick can appreciate British irony (after careful study) lol!

Just looking up some sites for dialouge from the film...hope people won't be too offended

Withnail: You'll be pleased to hear Monty's invited us for drinks.
Peter Marwood: Balls to Monty. We're getting out.
Withnail: Balls to Monty? I've just spent an hour flattering the bugger!
Peter Marwood: There's a man over there who doesn't like the perfume. The big one. Don't look, don't look! We're in danger, we've got to get out.
Withnail: What are you talking about?
Peter Marwood: I've been called a ponce.
            Withnail: What F***** said that?
Irishman: I called him a ponce. And now I'm calling you one, PONCE!
Withnail: Would you like a drink?
            Irishman: What's your name, MacF***?
Withnail: ...I have a heart condition. I have a heart condition, if you hit me it's murder.
Irishman: I'll murder the pair of yous!
Withnail: [Close to tears] My wife is having a baby! Listen, I don't know what my f... acquaintance did to upset you but it's nothing to do with me. I suggest you both go outside and discuss it sensibly, in the street.

In my all time top five. Endlessly quotable dialogue. The best bits are miles from the "finest wines known to humanity" and "liar! you have antifreeze" bits which seem to crop up on every Film 4 advert these days. I think that most of the funniest lines are in scenes when they're not drinking. And it's a tragedy too, really. Withnail's Hamlet soliloquy at the end is fantastic.
