When is a cheap call over the internet , not a cheap call? When you go to VoIP Communications. The sales blurb reads , 'huge savings' , ' take advantage of ip technology' etc etc.
1.5P pcu all local calls , etc .
PCU = per call unit.
Do you know what 'per call unit' means? Well it is a calculation of the pence per call PLUS an amount for overheads ! VoIP call this costs that vary by length of the call PLUS 'non-transport' costs. !!! this is not a specific amount and it cannot be readily be calculated from the bill which lists TCU ( Total call units). The bills do not offer you the duraction of the call.
Explanation: A 5 minute call actually results in a TCU charge of 13.3 !.
VoIP will therefore charge 21p for a local 5 minute call. More expensive than BT. A 1 minuta call with VoIP costs 9p due to charging of non-transport costs in the TCU calculation.
A call with VoIP to directory enquiries costs over £1.
This is a personal view based on my experience, you have been warned.
