For me there are only 2 Hot-Hatches that the new Civic Type-R has to be better than. The Golf GTI or the Focus ST. My reasons are simple, they are both very well balanced, quick, fun too drive cars. And that is what a Hot-Hatch should be. The Astra VXR cannot put its power down and it torque steers like a bitch. The Clio 197 is a really nice drive, as good as the GTI & ST, but its french! and we all know it will have reliability problems. What about the new Leon Cupra? well the last Cupra-R was a Decent (but not outstanding) Hot-Hatch, But early reports of the new one dont look too good, too much power, bad turbo lag, etc What about the Mazda 3 MPS? again reports are not too good, too much power, etc. I think there is very little between all of these cars, they are all very good really. That is why the price of the new Type-R is so important….most expensive in order….. Golf GTI at £20,360-£22,295, VXR from £19,995, ST £17,995-£19,995, and the Clio 197 from only £15,995…. No confirmed price on the new Leon Cupra yet, But the Mazda 3 MPS is only going to be £18,995 and thats a worry, the guy in the pub who likes quoting figures to his mates may well be tempted by its 257bhp engine and its sub £19k price, even if its on road manners are not that good. As nobody has driven the new Type-R yet we cant comment on how well it drives, but if it drives as well as it looks, and the price is right, I think it will be at the top of the Hot-Hatch tree this time next year. Make sure you get it right Honda!
