I shift driving technique

just taken delivery of 1.8 es 1 shift in vivid blue with panoramic glass roof, and very nice it is too!.But would consider any advice useful tha t could make me better at driving it in auto-I have’nt got the hang of it yet without the sensation about to stall it when I first move off,the salesman drove it fine,so I think it has got to be me! Also I was left with the owner manual that has no reference to the i shift what so ever,still waiting for the sales exec: to come back to me on this.
