Finally the new Iraqi government has been pursuaded to divide up the oil in Iraq between American, British and other oil companies.  They have agreed to give the companies extremely long term leases at unusually high rates of return.

Can we all go home now?

"Can we all go home now?"

Not until the last drop of oil has been squeezed out of that region...

You are so right!! What with four major bases and the biggest embassy in the world being built there, there's not a hope of us leaving.

It would really ammuse me if someone develops free perpetual motion tomorrow and the government is left with having to justify its expenditure in the middle east... to bad it won't happen.

The Iraqi government is still fighting this. They are at an impasse. The Iraqi people are begining to find out about it and are holding protest marches. Can you image the amount of pressure the Americans are putting on that government. It is one of the "benchmarks" they need to achieve.

We aren't going anywhere until our oil corporation friends have squeezed every last drop of that oil (and it's profits).

which would make sense why we are building bases all around the middle east (for the oil corporations)

i hope that dick cheney and the other extreme right wing lunatics dont get their wish - to invade iran.

I've been reading this book, The Long Emergency by James Kunstler. It's all about Peak Oil and the wars that will go on because America and other countries aren't addressing the fact that we have passed peak. They are hoping that technology will come up with the answer, but there is nothing in the offing that will do all that oil has. We need to get wind farms and solar projects going EVERYWHERE NOW, as it takes oil to make them.

"Peak Oil" is what it's all about for sure. The countries with the biggest guns are making sure they're all in the right place in time for when it really starts getting desperate.
