Linux or Windows

I have been a follower of the linux alternative and the GPL solution to property rights, but I must admit, I write this from my laptop in Windows XP. The OS came preinstalled (one question here?, can you imagine buying a TV set and been forced to watch just one Channel that has been pre installed?, well that's what computer vendors force us to accept and pay for).

The reasons of my betrayal are various:

  • Coherence with other computers at work
  • Coherence with people I work for that use propietary formats
  • No html editor comes with a handy ftp client feature
  • I do not find the magic key combination [Ctrl][+][U] to directly upload html files to the server that I have with Dreamweaver on Windows.
  • I had one computer only with ubuntu and it got stollen. The new one came with windows and stays there.
  • Local networks work really funny, not only that the mac in the office cannot find the very folder I need to work on sometimes, while it finds other sitting next to in with the same permissions.
  • ubuntu and linux in general, require a way to rethink my use of computers. I have gone through that, but there are always problems.

Yes there are also problems on windows, but due to compatibility issues, I can deal better with those problems than just adding more, those inherent to configuration, and those to do with compatibility. Not only on linux an extra work is needed for compatibility but also configuration is a tricky one.

This is a very good question. I would love to be the type of purist who can switch to Linux and do everything from there, but the truth is in all my previous roles I've had to work on Windows to fit in.

And now I know windows. I don't know Linux so well. All the short cut keys etc that make my life easy. The tactile look/feel etc. I'm just used to it.

After working with Windows since it first came out its very hard to switch.

Funny thing is that I started with macs, and as a result it made it easy for me to switch from Mac to Windows in the first place!

But now Windows seems to have taken on a life of its own, a very different way of doing things than mac.

On another note, I have always felt that a mac isn't quite as responsive when doing things like dragging/resizing.

    Probably just me.

similar experiences here. I'd love to use it - and do on the server - but just too many problems and time wasted with it.

I have been flopping between the two since around 1994. I usually tried it once a year and ended up dumping it before too long every time. Hard to get out of the comfort zone.

About 2 years ago I finally made the leap to using Linux as my primary. Started with Fedora, short stint with Slackware and now I am at home on Ubuntu with Enlightenment and very much enjoy it.

Windows...Always use it for graphics still. Gimp is just not a replacement for Photoshop by any stretch. I had used PHPedit for awhile but I have found Quanta Plus a great replacement for it. Quanta does have an ftp client built in, simple right-click and upload and the file finds its home. Quanta + Firefox + Firebug is all I seem to need for my coding needs. :)

Not sure I will ever get out of dual booting though. There are other things that are just easier in Windows too. Now it turns into the right tool for the job versus being forced into using something. Linux serves all my coding needs!

I use both WIndows and Linux. Personally, I would only use Linux on a server as the GUI/desktop versions just don't give the same seamless functionality or feel as Windows. I have Ubuntu running my website with PHP and MySQL and haven't had a single problem since it was built.

For the time being, my desktop is going to run WIndows XP as I'm still not swayed by Vista.

            This is my two cents...
