Using Ubuntu Linux on Older Desktop Computers -- surprises

I had a wonderful surprise when I pulled out an old and non-working desktop computer out of storage.

After a good clean and paint (a joint project with my eldest son) and a careful rebuilding of the system using slightly newer components (CDROM Drive, HDD, TV/Capture card etc), I installed Ubuntu Linux 6.10 on the 20GB HDD, part way through I had to leave the computer - so I had a slightly lesser surprise when I found the CD tray was out and the system was ready for it's first reboot.

Another surprise how great Ubuntu looks and feels on a desktop computer which I had purchased for my sister before  2000, having then been passed to my other sister and back again before a tragic event in the back of a trailer (HDD made the most scary noise ever on cold mornings).  And then back to me around 2003 where I used it as a RedHat 9 test machine at work for a couple of years before retiring it to the back shed after gently skeletonising it.

The sheer number of applications available for Ubuntu Linux amazes me, especially since my first install (5.04) on another machine of simliar vintage.

I had a chat with a family member who might be receiving an old computer from my sister.  I told her that I still had the first one, it was on and was running and had one of the latest operating systems (Linux) - this has been the best surprise of all.
