I'm thinking of getting some pet rats and was wondering if anyone had experience of keeping them, had any advice, suggestions etc.

Cheers

oddly enough, I can shed a little bit of light on this topic ~L~ If you are planning on keeping more then one, a couple of things .. the most obvious being, rodants breed like bunnies ~L~ So unless you intend to have a ton of them..keep the sexes seperate. On the same note they can tend to not be gender friendly, two or more males or females kept together can turn quite nasty! You might want to watch that too. If you don't want babies, and ya don't want them chewing eachother up, keep a couple of seperate cages(or aquariums). I've had a couple live long happy little lives this way. I would honestly suggest you start with one, maybe two .. They can really be quite personable little critters :) The ones we used to have were very tame, eat out of your hands, sit on your shoulder, even give ya kisses on the nose hehe ... I hope some of that helps ya out .. good luck and do let us know :)

Rats are amazing pets they are very affectionate when raised right. Pay a little extra for a hand reared one...rat bites are nasty...i have scars... they are clean easy to train.
I would not reccomend keeping more than one! They are easy to feed, not very picky you can give them a varied diet of fresh veg and stuff but they trive on pellet/dried diets to and just the odd helping of fresh food! Husky Rats are amazing they get very big and have fablous coats, they are very slighty more expensive. But Hooded rats are lovely too...
Don't take on a rat if you don't want to commit to spending alot of time handling and playing with it because this keeps them tame and friendly!!

Keep them away from wires and any tiny nooks they might dissappear into... a rat ball is essential!!!

Rats really are a worthwhile pet they are rewarding pets!
