Saw Savoy Brown last night to cap off another great birthday celebration. Kim Simmonds is an outstanding player and I was basically sitting right beside where he was with a clear view of everything he did with his guitars. Watching such a talented guitarist is hypnotizing.
When he broke into Tell Mama, one of the signature Savoy Brown tunes with some great slide guitar, he mentioned as the song went along he would talk about some things. About midway through the song he talked about his first guitar being a mail order guitar he bought with money saved from a paper route. When delivered he found out he had to assemble it, but afterwards he was engrossed for months, coming out of it being able to play. The Tell Mama lyric came from his telling his mother he was going to be a guitarist for a living. Fast forward to recent times, he was at Wal Mart and saw a guitar kit in a box with an amp, on sale for $120. He bought it, mentioning that he has to work at keeping the 13 year old inside of him alive and that was one of those moments. Then he told us the guitar he was playing (tuned different than the Flying V he usually plays) Tell Mama on was that guitar. Proved my point about my own guitar purchase, a good player can make a 2x4 with rubber bands sound good. Now I just have to become a good player.
