The Eurovision Song Contest took place in Helsinki on Saturday 12th May.
Ireland had what could only be seen as the worst result imaginable - LAST PLACE, with 5 points received from Albania.
Ireland has always been a strong contender in the Eurovision. This has changed considerably, but why? Is it that the songs submitted are just not good enough, is there any truth to the allegations of "Block Voting" by the eastern european countries?
What do I think? I think Ireland need to take a close look at the entries that are winning and their winning format and style. The contest has changed a great deal from the days of DANA and "all kinds of wonderful". If we want to win, we need to up our game and come out with all the "bells and whistles" that have made their way to the stage of the eurovision. But is that what us Irish want to do... be remembered for putting on a bunch of leprechauns, playing rock music, using traditional irish instruments... it would probably win, but would we want to stand over that sort of entry to a song contest, we've won it seven time, and had such winners as Johnny Logan (twice) and Niamh Kavanagh, and not forgetting Dana.
If we want to win, perhaps, we could break up the republic of Ireland into a number of seperate countries i.e County Cavan would now become the Republic of Cavan, Republic of Cork - you get my drift another 32 "countries" from one island - This could of course give us some more options for gaining points... I don't think it will happen, nor do I think Ireland can win again if they continue to submit similar entries.
What do you think?
