Google is to ban adverts for essay writing services - following claims that plagiarism is threatening the integrity of university degrees.

There have been complaints from universities about students being sold customised essays on the internet.

IMO, banning advertising for ill-advised products or services isn't an effective method to deal with whatever extent to which they are a problem. It seems to me that Google increasingly is yielding to pressures of various sorts. And it seems to me that doing so reduces Google's stature, rather than enhancing it, and mis-serves its users, rather than serving them. I'm beginning to wonder what presumptions, assumptions, and biases may be built into its logarithms. With Google now developing a service for rating "hot trends," based on searches that are based on those factors, whatever they are, perhaps Google is beginning to assume too large a role in our lives. And perhaps, "to google" will acquire a negative connotation if this organization goes too far astray from simple service.
