So much for getting the best price on the internet. I needed to update some anti-virus software on a laptop. I went to Norton's .com site and found the downloadable package for $39.99 (expensive but acceptable). But without a U.S. shipping address I actually can't buy the product at that price. Instead, I have to go to Norton's UK site and pay £39.99 (precisely double the price) for the exact same product. What a rip off!!

Did I miss a trick here, or do I have to accept paying twice as much as my friends in the States for the same thing?

JV - Surprised? You live on Treasure Island ( Rip Off UK). But why bother? Download Avast - free, fast and effective. (And recommended in The Sunday Times today.) N.B. A warning re Norton - I recently deleted my Symantec (Norton anti-virus) half-way through sub year, after two painful years - constant notifications of expired subscriptions within 3 or 4 months of paying for 12 month subs/causing probs with other stuff on my laptop whilst sorting it out (their email Help said could not detect fault) and eventually slowing down my on-line operation to almost a standstill.

I'll check it out and totally agree about Norton sucking the processing power out of the laptop!

I have a similar issue with digital music. I buy my music from Beatport.com and they used to price each track in US dollars. Several months ago they upgraded their site and now can detect I am buying from the UK. Now all the prices are in pounds sterling and 40% higher than they cost in dollars. E.g. a track that costs $1.99 is charged to me at £1.29. $1.99 converts to about £1, so they're adding 29p!

How the crap does THAT work?! It's DIGITAL music. An mp3 for gods sake. There's no postage or packaging!

OK, so I know the real reason and it makes sense - but I still don't like it. In fact, it pisses me off! Beatport have said that the reason for this is licensing issues. The UK record labels have said they won't allow their music to be sold on the site unless the tracks are sold at a certain price.

Beatport USED to be the cheapest site exactly because of the fact it sold its music in dollars and I could buy it from them and not from the overly priced UK retailers. Now all digital music sites charge the same amount! So much for competition - the market is rigged.

So all I have to do surf to Beatport from a computer outside of Europe and I will get the exact same track in dollars. Like Austrailia. Yep, the ozzies get it in US dollars. Go figure...

my free anti virus weapon-of-choice is Grisoft AVG, its anti virus and firewall, and does not take up as much processor power as Nortons. Try this or Avast as mentioned above and see how you get on with them.
