To Ink or not to Ink...That is the Question!

So here is a thought I have been having since my interesting teen years.  Are tatoos on women attractive or not?  As a teen I wanted to get a tatoo.  I have always thought about it off and on over the years since.  The main reason for not getting one in the past was my Ex.  He felt that a tatoo on a woman was the most unattractive thing on the plannet, and basically told me that my getting one would tell him that I neither loved or respected him.  (he was kind of a controling jerk).

Again I am talking about a discrete tatoo in a discrete location.  (all you perverts get your mind out of the gutter, I was talking about my ankle)  Something fairly small and meaningful to me.  The question is, is it attractive?  I know that shouldn't matter, but again, some people have very strong opinions about such things.

I would like to get as many opinions as possible.  It's not like getting your ears pierced.  (I personally have 9 earings)  Take out a stud and the hole closes over.  No worries.  Getting rid of ink is not so simple.  Nor as painless.  So what does everyone think?  To Ink or not to Ink?

Since it is to become a part of your body- only you can say whether it will be beautiful or not- if it means something to you and you want it for the rest of your life then get it. If you have hesitations- then maybe its not for you- but what other people think of it shouldn't really play into it- :)

I totally agree with TR. It's your body and it's permanent so you should do it only if YOU want to do it. Ask yourself why you want one. Is it because as a teen all the "cool kids" had one? Is it to make yourself "more attractive"?

I'm half scottish and fiercely proud of my ancestry. When I was a teen I wanted to get a celtic band around my upper arm. A design that was personal to me based on my Highland lineage. But a few "cool" friends at school started getting ones of their own and the "celtic-band" style tatoo seemed very popular. It totally put me off getting one because I didn't want to be seen as copying them!

Now I'm older though (and couldn't give a flying monkey crap what anyone else thinks) I think I might revisit the idea...

There's a tatoo that tons of girls get which is located above the bum on the back (between the hips). Because they are so common nowadays and because you tend to only see them when girls are wearing very little there is an amusing nickname for them: "a tramp-stamp"

      Don't get a tramp-stamp!

You asked our opinions on wether we find it attractive or not ?
Ok then . No i don't , not even the slightest bit do i find a tattoo on a woman attractive , but that doesnt mean i wouldn't go out with a girl with tats if that was her thing .

A friend of mine got a shamrock on her bum, a Latin phrase on her lower back, and her nipples pierced, and none of it is visible. She likes to know she has them even though they stay covered up from everyone else. But I wonder what it will be like when she's 75 and that shamrock is all saggy and got stretchmarks? Maybe that will just make her a cool grandma!

I my humble (!) opinion, natural is best. Always. I personally do not like tattoos, and there are some very valid responses here - including those that say 'it's up to you' but most of the people I know who have had them hate them.

A funny story (actually tragic): My friend lived with, and loved Julie. So he plucks up the courage, and has a wonderful tattoo with 'Julie' on it across his arm. He gets home (you KNOW what's coming don't you?) and says 'I have something to show you' as she says 'I've something to tell you....'

This was 20 years ago. He still has the tattoo.

First of all, thanks for all the feedback.
As far as "it's my body, and up to me" There isn't a person on the planet that can make me do something I don't want to do. (year of the fire dragon, that's me)
I was asking more in a physical attraction sense. Personally I think tattoos on men are attractive, so long as they are not over board, and not spiders.
I do appreciate all the feed back. And the lower back thing, Yah, I've heard the "it's a bulls eye" comments, and not my thing.
I drew some things in the past that I have considered. And location is everything. I don't think my ankle is going to get too horribly wrinkled as I age. It's a shark when your 20 and a guppy when your 80. So yah, any more thoughts are welcome.
            Thanks

Actually - I quite like the idea of a tattoo. I am rather older than you and in my youth only sailors, circus performers, and um, rough types had them. Now, in moderation, they seem to be a quite attractive female adornment . I agree that you must be careful where on the body to have one done. Nowhere that will wrinkle as you age and the skin sags. An ankle seems a good place. Many older, even ageing, women have good legs. But yr question seems to be - would it be physically attractive to the opposite sex? I honestly don't know for you and yr body - how could I? But if you are so insecure in your body image as to worry about it then I would advise against it. In my experience men are attracted by all sorts of things and confidence in yourself is an important factor. But strangely ( hmmn) men are also less concerned with the details - they just like women. As long as you are generally likeable I don't think one modest tattoo is going to make any difference to most men. Perhaps to one or two it will be a turn off, for maybe a few more it will be a turn on. But be true to yourself - fire dragon!

as a womans skin does not age gracefully (sadly) the positioning of the tatt is important.. from what I know the lower back will be one of the few places that does not get all wrinkled yet again it being so close to the bone is also quite a bit more painful (again depends on your pain threshhold)
I have not gotten a tatt as I always feared what it would look like when I am old and all wrinkled! LOL

Ink if you want to, I first saw the design for my first tattoo when very young, I waited until I was 30 to get it done and I dont regret it., My skin is slightly older now and the inking is still OK, remember the older you are when you have it done the less stretching it will do in comparison to your youthful days.
As for how it looks, who cares what other people think its how it makes you feel that matters.
I just had my second one done a couple of weeks ago, both on my upper arms and easily covered by a T-shirt. I love them they are both unique to me, get your tatooist to do something difeent to make it yours, dont forget black is easier to top up than colour, and colour bleeds and fades quicker.
                    I hope this helps.

Personally, I think it's fine for women to have tattoos. Just as long as they don't have a swallow on their neck, left/right on their knuckles or the dreaded 'tramp stamp' it's fine.
What design were you thinking of getting moosetracks?

Thanks for all the feedback. I am glad that so many people have responded to this topic. Mcbrowser, I drew a grey scale (black and white drawing) dragon in High School. Something very personal and original. I have also drawn a celtic knot with the 5 elements in anglo saxon ruins. (yes I mean 5 elements, spirit is considered an element in many cultures)
It is interesting as to how many people have very strong opinions about tattooing. Again, this discussion is not about asking if I should get something done, but wether or not it is attractive. Those of you worried about my self esteem, no need. I am very secure, and happy. Just curious to others thoughts. My Ex hated them, one of my sisters and one of my brothers have them, and several good friends of mine have them (both male and female) and very few of them regret getting it done. The feed back here has been great. Maybe I'll scan my drawing and post it, or not. No big deal.

nice one lass, as for attractive, tramp-stamps-NO, NO massive spider webs on face , but a butterfly/dragon/any design tastfully done- yup why not they are after all another form of body jewelry.

It depends where. I generally prefer without, but I'm not 100% opposed to the idea.

ankles are fine, places generally covered up are fine, but directional signs I'm not a big fan of, but that's just my opinion.

Depends on the person it is going on, the design, and the motives. A bad tattoo isn't necessarily going to make a beautiful woman ugly, but i wouldn't say it is attractive. Likewise a beautiful tattoo isn't going to change an unattractive woman. What will happen is a woman that feels strongly about something/someone and makes that part of her, thats pretty sexy.

I recently had my first ink done on my right shoulder - it's a quilting square with a celtic knot - done in green... with my sister's signature "Terri" on it. My 2 sisters and I all had the same ink done - Reason: My sister Terri passed away 2 years ago from Breast Cancer. It was an exact replica of a quilt she'd designed, down to the detail work of the stitching. It bears her signature as if she'd signed it. Essentially it was our way of remember her and making sure her name is always on our hearts so to speak. Why did I share? I think tattoos are great if they have personal meaning, and significance, and they are done by a great artist who understands what you want and more importantly, why you want one. And I say - if having it brings up a very personal memory that keeps you grounded or allows you to be more in touch with who you are - it will ultimately be an attractive feature!
