The DRM walls are crumbling. Earlier this week, Steve Jobs called on the major record labels to allow online music sales unfettered by digital rights management restrictions.

Today, the Wall Street Journal disclosed that EMI is in negotiations with several digital music services to sell unprotected MP3s of its catalogue. Jobs was motivated at least in part by legal actions against Apple in Europe and the US as discussed below. But whatever his motivation, Jobs is right: DRM has been a disaster for the recording business. This article will outline the brief but sad history of DRM, the current legal attacks on it, and the reasons why the recording business would be far better off without it.

Nice article, though I can see record labels holding on to DRM for as long as their spidery little fingers can hold!

I agree with Teqqles but I think DRM's days are truly numbered. Ideally it will be banished to history as a failed attempt to control huge corporation market share, however I get a horrible feeling it will be reincarnated in some other more insidous form we've yet to see.

In the meantime, I'm happy to see so many music bands and film makers use the internet as their way to reach their fans. This sidesteps the money-grabbing middle men!

I hope they will choose to use Woyano too because here they don't just have one single "channel" to reach their audience, they have an entire "network" - and it's completely under their control!
