Yes, the inheritance trilogy is almost wholely derivative, with Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Earthsea and Dragonriders of Pern all having many similarities, but what Christopher Paolini does with Eldest (second book in the inheritance trilogy) is remarkable give his age. I found the book both gripping (to my better halves dismay) and gritty, with many scenes (which Hollywood will oblitorate when this book is made into a poor excuse for a block buster) evolving this epic and leading to the finale which is unfortunately not quite as much of a twist as the author had intended - but still engrossing enough for many a fan to clamor for the sequel.
No, this book is far from the worst fantasy tale I have read over the last few years, far from it - both available books in the series are enjoyable (if a little simple), given the age of the young author it is unsurprising that certain epics would influence this trilogy, but I wouldn't say that such influences harm the tale.
Some scenes are somewhat disappointing and distract from the tale, but overall and without referencing any scenes (purposely as to not reduce anyones enjoyment of the book) it is a worthy read, but don't take my word for it - read it!
