Forwarding a request from my friend Columbine for our mutual friend Anne. My personal experiences of Anne are that she is one of the most generous people I have met and someone who truly believes in finding the joy in life. For a woman who was told a decade ago that she would never walk again, I've seen her bouncing around with the best of them to her favorite music. Anytime it rains she and Vic have to take turns manning the 30 gallon garbage cans catching the water cascading into their home from the giant hole in their roof. I need your vote! Well, Anne needs a roof, and you might be able to get her one by voting...
Robinhood Fund is an online community where anybody can post wishes - ANY wishes, naughty or nice - and then they get funded based on how many people sign up and vote for it. You don't have to contribute a cent (although you can if you want to) - the funding comes from philanthropists who want to practice charity by popular vote, rather than having some board of directors make the decisions. There are lots of other cool things you can do if you sign up, too. You can post your own wishes, vote for other wishes, chat on the web board, take & post polls & surveys... But mostly, I'd be very psyched if you'd vote for my wish: a roof for Anne!
I've never done this before, but it looks like the people who can spread the word most efficiently are folks who have blogs. If you have a blog, Myspace, Facebook, anything like that, would you please consider posting this wish to your blog? The Robinhood Fund webpage is specifically set up to make it ridiculously easy to post a wish to a blog.
Voting for this wish will begin Wednesday, June 6, at noon, and run for exactly a week. Even if Anne doesn't win, some people might decide to donate anyway, and she'll get that no matter how many votes she gets. It's a long shot - but it's a shot I didn't know we had, and sometimes it is enough to aim...
Have I told Anne? No. I don't want to get her hopes up if it doesn't work, and I'm frankly so clueless about bloggy stuff that for all I know I'm not even doing it right. THE WISH:
My friend Anne is an inner-city schoolteacher, and her husband does seasonal tourism work (pilots a duck boat) as well as Coast Guard emergency work when it's needed. Both have significant health problems and should have retired years ago, but spent all their money taking care of family members and have no savings. Now one third of their roof has been destroyed by weather, and hurricane season has begun. They've spent what they had on a tarp to keep out however much water it will, for as long as it holds.
Anne has given so many children from violent, drug-poisoned neighborhoods their lives back, showed them that they're worth the effort to succeed, comforted them when their family members were shot down. I don't want her and her husband to lose their home to the devastation of the elements. They've lived all their lives for others, and wouldn't dream of asking - so I am.
