June 9, 2007 -- AL Roker apologized yesterday for joking about epileptic seizures on Thursday's "Today" show. "Remember that controversial Olympic logo for the 2012 Olympics in London? Some folks have complained that the campaign actually sent them into epileptic seizures," Roker said on Thursday's show. "Well, we asked you to weigh in on our Web site in an informal poll; those of you who could get up off the floor after shaking around were able to actually log in . . . " Yesterday, Roker said he was sorry. "I started joking about it. I want to make this clear - I was not joking about epilepsy or anyone who suffers from epilepsy," he said at around 8:04 a.m. while he was delivering a weather report from Milwaukee. "We understand and know that this is a serious affliction and would never joke about that. "We were joking about the logo - not about epilepsy. If anybody was offended, I heartily and really humbly apologize."

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but, no matter how many times I read this quote, in context, out of context, whatever! Al Roker is mocking this serious disease. That being said; Al Roker was the same person who, when radio host Don Imus said something in jest about a certain basketball team that was offensive to a certain group of people, went to NBC heads and called for the firing of Don Imus and all of his staff. One week later, Don Imus was fired from his radio show. Now, if Al Roker was to live by the standards he sets for other people, then he should step down from his position as Today Show co-host.Show your support, email your complaint to today@msnbc.com

Wow, Al Roker has been a weatherman on the Today Show for as long as I can remember. I have no doubt that some people with epilepsy would be seriously offended, as would be many people who are concerned about disabilities.

I grew up with a friend who had this terrible affliction, and I can tell you it was no joke.
He always had to take his medication, could not watch certain tv programs, couldn't get a driving license, had to get a 'safe' job where he could not get injured if he had an attack.
Basically, his whole life was and will be affected by this disease, and to get a cheap laugh, Roker comes out with these hurtful comments.
      It's downright wrong!

I can understand your outrage because Roker's joke does impact people who have battled epilepsy, and it really seems unfair that he would target the disability in an effort to get a laugh. It's probably a kind of unconscious ableism that he didn't even consider until the complaints started rolling in. Whether or not he is dismissed from his job, I think he stands to learn a lot from this mistake. If one of us "normal" people slips like that in everyday conversation, we would get a quick lesson in respect for differing abilities from our good friends. When it comes from a public figure and TV personality, well, they have to remember that careless words can be extremely damaging.

          Absolutely!
More concerning to me though, is how he can be so hypocritical.
I would say that Don Imus' slip of the lip was less damaging then Rokers.
At least if you tune in to Imus, you know exactly what you are getting. He is, or was, a shock jock. His job is to make racy comments, entertain people, and this is exactly what he did.
When you watch the Today Show, you are expecting to be informed about stuff. Some subtle humor is ok, but no more.
          Roker was out of line.

Yeah, well this is the actual spot that I learned about Woyano...
Roker and many others are examples of what happens when we dumb down our culture...if you let people devolve to their careless selves, they will always laugh at pooh jokes, make fun of the disabled or otherwise different, etc. because they are not making an intellectual effort to keep from doing such things. They will also eat like pigs, get smashed or loaded, and then blame everything that doesn't go their way on someone else...
