Portuguese police are investigating a tip-off from Dutch police claiming to know the whereabouts of missing toddler Madeleine McCann.
An anonymous letter sent to the De Telegraaf newspaper was passed on to police in Amsterdam. It claims the four-year-old's body is buried under rocks in deserted scrubland nine miles from where she was abducted on May 3.
The letter was reportedly written by the same person who last year sent a letter providing the exact location of two murdered Belgian girls.
It states that Madeleine's body can be found buried "north of the road under branches and rocks, around six to seven metres off the road" in a barren and deserted hilly landscape. Crosses on an accompanying map claim show the location of her body.
Chief Inspector Olegario Sousa of the Portuguese police said the information is being taken seriously and "everything necessary" is being done to validate the allegation.
He said: "There have been exchanges between Dutch police and us. The information indicated an area 15km from the place of the disappearance of the little child. It is not far from Praia da Luz."
He added: "We are checking the information like we check everything in this case for importance."
