So I'm now going to Prague for 10 days in July! I can't wait.. my sister is studying there for a month at the university for a writer's course (she is a poet) and I'm going to go visit her.

Any one have any good stories from Prague? Where to go..what to do? I'm going to buy the book and read up on it of course- but sometimes word of mouth makes for the best recommendations.

:)

I have some great stories from Poland, but never had the pleasure of visiting Czechoslovakia. There are some great beers there -- pilsners were invented in Pilsen, the Home of Pilsner Urquell, and Budvar (in German, Budweiser) and Staropramen are good beers.

Taste a few for me and have fun.

I visited there in the WAY back days. Must have been around '80 or '81. This was when The Wall still existed so it was probably a completely different country than it is now. Some things of interest from my visit that you might compare might be:

          * Patent leather shoes cost $4/pair
          * Christal cost less than a song and was of very high quality
          * The exchange rate on the street was around 40 to 1
          * The border guards were not fools and should be treated with proper respect
          * There was a flag store there where we bought a Soviet flag the size of a Buick and an East German flag that covered the living room ceiling
          * I was able to pay for a taxi ride with three American cigarettes

The secret police were quite active, too, so discretion was the word.

But again, this was over 25 years ago. Maybe someday I'll write about it.

Prague is beautiful. But I was there in the old days too, it's a lot more touristy now. Golden Lane is interesting, the old Town Square, too.
