Include your location, amount of people, and any luxuries that are included in the sum.

Wellll, I thought I'd respond, but it turns out more complex than expected. I almost always write a check. I buy lots of frozen stuff, and my freezer mostly stays full. I usually buy "a handful" of stuff for cash once or twice during a given month. I buy some fresh produce at another store and there's no way to see that separately. Hmmmm. So I put together all the checks I wrote directly to the supermarket, made a couple of guesses, and divided by the 25 weeks this covers _ and I come up with about $95 a week. But it's not all food _ there are coffee filters, and other non-food items _ like the gardening trowel I bought recently because it looked so strong and shiny *LOL* _ but which I promptly misplaced so I never got to use it. Ah, but that's off topic. So, luxuries _ what are those? A living plant? (I bought at least 8; I know because I've got five growing _miniature roses, those _ but the others died, as usually, so maybe it was 10 or so, instead of 8). A clutch of flowers just because I like having some in the house once in a while, though I'm the only one who sees them? Ice cream bars with nuts _ that's a food, but maybe a luxury food? Or, shrimp _ now, that's a luxury even if it IS a food; do you KNOW how much they cost per pound??!! Good heavens!! And I'm actually not even supposed to eat them _ but I have some in that freezer right now, LOL. Could I spend less? Oh yes, suuure _ probably by about half and certainly at least by a third. Anyway, since my freezer is still pretty much full, some of that $90 average won't be eaten until late July. Does that count? Recently, I remember having forgotten the check book and paying with a credit card _ which also doesn't show separately in the check stubs. And those "handfuls" for cash sometimes are $60 or even $80 worth. Hmmmmm. so, how much DO i spend a week or a month on food? I'll be darned if I know! What the heck, call if $95 a week, including the junk and luxury stuff; no way to get a closer figure. Urrm, does this help? LMAO. Wellll, I tried.

      Thanks for all of that.
I am not as smart a shopper as you, but I am trying. This being the reason for this "little survey of mine"... *L* sounds like a song, "this little survey of mine, let it shine... lol
Anyway, on point, I was shopping once per month, for 4 people, buying meat in bulk, frozen foods etc. and spending $300 give or take. This is not a problem. The daily trip to the local store was costing between $10 and $40.
My other half is responsible for the daily trips.
In a month, my groceries can cost me between $400 and $700, but on average it comes to around $650 and I can't comprehend it.
I shop smart. I buy things that are on sale, and I constantly re-evaluate the contents of my shopping cart, putting back things that I feel I could do without.
Thanks for bringing me inside your kitchen*L*

Have you chosen your grocery store for location or price? Some are cheaper than others- those that dont' have all the fancy extras- pharmacies, full deli counters with salad bars, etc. tend to price their food cheaper because they aren't charging overhead.

also- of course shop the sales weekly for the nice to have items that don't fall into the bulk shopping- and finally ..coupons- tedious ..but over time can save!

You also might look online to see if there are any shopping services that deliver bulk but for cheaper rates - dont even know if that is out there though!

Believe me, I shop at the least expensive places. I am probably the only person in there paying cash. Everyone else has food stamps, is how cheap it is.

          Here ya go....

2 people 2 cats / live in Bayonne, NJ 07002

I tend to shop daily or every few days as needed because I really insist on fresh non frozen meat and veg. But I'll do my best.

I tend to splurge on things because the truth is better does taste better.
I always use fresh herbs and veg although I grow a lot of herbs so I don't buy them as often. hmmm

Beef depends on if it's in a sauce or braised if it's just a grilled steak it's got to be prime! choice won't cut it!Meats we eat are beef, lamb, pork, chicken, duck, and a wide assortment of fish. 3 - 4 meals a week are meat and veg 2 - 3 are usually all veg or fish. I always have a fresh supply of lemons, limes, avacados, plum tamatos, onions, green and red peppers, garlic. Always have a bag of frozen peeled cooked shrimp in the freezer on standby, always have at least a dozen or more hot suaces, always have humus, flat bread, wraps / tortillas. At any given time I'll have beef, chicken, lamb, pork of some sort in the fridge. Always have an assortment of olives and fresh chilis. Always have club soda, a few select rums and usually about 20 - 30 bottles of wine varying in price. And last but not least a huge pile of carrots, apples and ginger for juicing.... the remenants make pretty kewl muffins too!

any way this is a rough guess but about $150.-- $200.00 every 2 weeks with an occasional fill in the gaps here and there of about $30 - $50 now and then.

So I'd say $400 - $500 per month but I don't look for sales or use coupons the stuff I buy is rarely ever on sale other than the meats and veg

          any way hope this helps

:) I just like to cook and really having good ingredients is the only way to make good food and they don't cost that much more than preprocessed crud you can buy.

It's about, am I, or my other half, spending too much on groceries.
Even after all of the money is spent, the fridge still seems empty.
Basically, what is the average amount that people survive on. How much does it differ from person to person, taking location into account.

OK, earlier I intended to sprinkle wry humor along with the facts _ and should have made clear that I'm the only one eating what I buy and that I'm in metro in Arizona. Now, speaking of facts, a bit of web research finds that folk say that on average, people spend a sixth to a third of their income on food. Some suggest that a family of four could eat decently on $130 a week. Some members of the US Congress recently tried to eat decently on $3 a day, about what is said to be the average that food stamp recipients are given. I didn't pay any attention to their attempt or results, figuring kinda that anyone could do anything for a while but that that has little to do with real day-to-day living.

Quoting from a site that was giving statistics to back up a contention that the statistics err *s*:

For a family of four, "which USDA defines as a couple, 20 to 50 years and two children, 2 to 5 years old, weekly food costs supposedly range from $104.50 a week, or $5,434 for the year (the "Thrifty" plan) to $198.90, or $10,342.80 for the year (the "Liberal" plan).

"If we consider the "Moderate" plan in between those two, USDA estimated that a family of four would spend $160.60 a week on food, or $8,135.20 for a year. Of course, that only includes spending for food products purchased at retail, not meals purchased for eating away from home. If we accept USDA's estimate that 58 percent of household food budgets are spent buying food products for home preparation, then we would have to add another 42 percent, or $5694.64, to the family food budget."

Another site's 2004 article speaks of having created a healthier menu based on what folk typically actually ate and figured that "the average monthly food cost [for the healthier food] was $242 for a senior living alone and $692 for a family of four."

Another site says that "A family of four including two children between the ages of 6 and 11 would spend an average of $156 per week in the 'moderate' category."

the answer seems to be that there's no consistent answer *s*

                        Thanks for that.
I guess it's where you shop, and what you shop for, is the key.

It becomes clearer that in order to get useful information, one would have to localize this survey, and group families of the same age and quantity, together, and possibly of similar ethnic backgrounds.

In retrospect, a broad idea has been given of the expense of groceries, and hey... if I am really lazy, I can add 'em up and get the average and go with it...*L*

Personally, I would consume about $30.00 of groceries every week. I don't understand where the rest of the money goes.

                          Meat $10.00

I don't eat much bread. Maybe a slice per week, if any.
My refrigerator is packed with mayo, relish, steak sauce, teriyaki, bbq. I bought them ages ago, and I use them very rarely.
Don't really eat anything canned, except for the odd soup, if I'm feeling lazy.
I have had a can of tuna in my cupboard for more then a few months..

Hang on a minute, Steber, you're saying your personal grocery bill amounts to $120 a month, plus $15 for your dog. The rest, you imply, is spent by you or your partner to feed three people. Do I have that right? With these comments flying around it's hard to get the straight story. And the grand total is on average $650 per month. That seems like a darned lot of money to me, and maybe most of it is spent on the daily trips, since it's really tough to bring home more than $200 worth of groceries in one trip! So it's you, your partner, and two Arnold Schwartzeneggar sized guys right? I think I spend on average about $50 a week just for myself, and that includes fun trips to Fresh and Wild and Marks and Spencer, the more expensive places to grocery shop in London. Though you add in the times I dine out and it's probably closer to $100. Even though I live in London, I'm still a California girl in the sense that I have to stop at Burger King and buy a Large Diet Coke in the cup with lid and straw and tons of ice. That happens every other day, since I'm weaning myself off this D.C. addiction. I probably spend $5-10 a week alone in Diet Cokes! *L*

                                That’s exactly my point.
When I get my Amex bill, I don't understand why it is so damn much.
Oh, it's $15.00 per week for my doggie. She's a 'big un'.
Anyway, I have a few weeks off from work, so, even though I am relatively immobilized, I am going to do most of the shopping to get a realistic figure.
It's not a big thing, but I would like to put any extra money towards my car payments. The interest is killing me.

Steber, how come you haven't introduced your doggie to the group by posting her photo to the Wackiest Pet Contest? *L*

It sounds like there's something fishy going on. But I will say this, sometimes women do spend more while grocery shopping because in many cases it's the chick who manages the household and she has to account for things like toiletries, light bulbs, Kleenex/ toilet paper, vacuum bags, items for special events like birthday cards and whatnot, and don't forget if you're a family with kids, forget about it, kids are just plain expensive. Especially all those processed, packaged foods that go in school lunches! My mom hated taking my sister and me to the grocery store with her, the cart would end up loaded with sugary cereals, string cheese, Lunchables, fruit roll ups, Teddy Grahams, juice boxes, Doritos, I could go on for hours. You gotta love kids but they will eat your bank account empty!

They get lunch at school, or they make themselves a pb+j sandwich.
I have given up trying to understand it. I will experience it for myself over the coming week or two.
I have figured out that I can't figure it out...lol

I tried to take a pic of my dog, but the camera on my cell is pretty crap, also, hopping around on one leg trying to catch "the shot" of my pooch is as difficult... no.... it's more difficult then it sounds. :0)
I guess I will post one I took... better then nothing, right? *L*

                                  This is my two cents...
