"It's the inconsistency I can't stand," he says. "If you're going to quote Leviticus, then don't eat shellfish or wear mixed fabrics. Poke your eye out if you look at women other than your wife ... then come to me."

John Amaechi, as a British man of African descent, was a very successful professional basketball player in the States for a time. He publicly came out and then retired from the NBA. His book, "Man in the Middle" was released in Feb 2007. Now he is studying for a PhD in child clinical psychology. I like his philosophy, though he has been called arrogant in the past, he is very intelligent and witty. He definitely challenges anyone who would use a literal reading of the Bible to attack gay people.

"Arrogance" is an interesting phenomenon. It's a very subjective thing. When someone tells us something that we don't like, that we disagree with, and then they insist on it, we usually accuse that person of arrogance. When someone is utterly self-confident and secure in their values and beliefs, and when those values and beliefs threaten our own, we usually accuse that person of arrogance.

But as someone once said to me, "It's only arrogance when you're wrong." And I agree with that. I think we tar people with the label "arrogant" to our own peril, if we don't listen closely to what they're saying, consider their arguments, look at the evidence, and make a sincere judgment about the truth or falsehood of their message.

To not do so is, I think, arrogant.

Georgie, I have to admit I'd never heard of him till recently -- because I don't know anything about basketball! He does sound really interesting -- if possibly a bit arrogant. I didn't know he used the Bible like that till I read the Guardian piece.

He is now doing good work here
