    I remember my mother in law - a gentle lady to the end. A lost mother to my husband, and grandmother to my children. Let's hope the new drug therapy will become re-available on the NHS.

      My mother was, almost always, gentle, to the end. A lost mother to me. The new drugs might not have helped her that much as she was injured, that exacerbated her dementia, and she died within a year. But I hope they do become available.

        If anyone knows someone with developing Alzheimer's I'd try giving nootropic drugs a shot. They are made from completely natural ingredients and are completely non-toxic. Their complete effects are not known yet, but they have been shown to increase brain hemisphere synchronization, reduce instances of Alzheimer's in mice and to solidify memories. Centrophenoxine (basically choline), hydergine, vasopressin and piracetam/oxiracetam/aniracetam are a good routine. Also suggest using fish oil for omega-3s and 9s, a good multivitamin with B12 and betaine. All the ingredients for a healthy brain. Will also work to prevent Alzheimer's.

          My heart goes out to anyone and every family that has been touched by Alzheimer's. I'm so glad that you posted this reminder for awareness of dementia. Other than drug therapy, has anyone been keeping up to date on recent research about how we can eat right or take supplements that will give us a few more years before being affected by Alzheimer's? I have heard that this or that will prevent Alzheimer's, but I can't recall what it was now.

          Addendum, Just read 7thdirection's post on nutrition supplements, thanks for that. Are these the main strategies we know of to prevent Alzheimer's? Does "exercising your memory" work?

            I try to keep up with research on this even though I'm probably not at high risk, I've already experienced a certain cognitive decline (but the Kendrick tests suggest I'm OK so far) and want to stave off anything further! Georgie, the main strategies I've heard of are exercise, nutrition -- but I hadn't heard of nootropic drugs till now -- and 'memory/brain' work.

            More is being found out about Alzheimer's all the time. But there's also vascular-injury dementia to consider, anything that helps the heart and circulation will help prevent that.

            Ill do some research!

              I don't know if nootropics are the "main way" to treat Alzheimer's, they have just recently started doing experiments on their effectiveness but they seem like one way to go. They're natural and can be bought without a prescription though so that's nice. I think these help by giving nutrients to important neurotransmitters in the brain, but certainly body/mind exercise and the body's nutrition are equally as important. But by doing all four I'm certain one would be fairly safe from Alzheimer's. Also a thing to note is that the Alzheimer's mice treated with nootropics (who already had brain damage) began to operate normally within a few months of treatment. So even someone who is already in the later stages may find some relief from nootropics (hopefully!)
