Pimlico Plumbers rip-off

Apologies, this is a rant, but hopefully with an intelligent point of reflection.

I live in London and recently the two toilets in my house started leaking.

I called a well know company called Pimlico Plumbers who informed me the plastic cisterns needed changing  (each one costs £30-£40). When they finished the job, I was completely amazed to receive a bill for £800 ($1600). Lets be clear, they didn't change the toilet bowl, fit a new bathroom, put a boiler in, whatever. They just changed two plastic cisterns.

OK, so I've been royally ripped-off, taken to the cleaners, conned, call it what you will.

My hopefully intelligent point of reflection is how it makes me feel. I haven't been physically harmed, no one burgled my home, and yet I feel so frustrated and abused - which I know is completely irrational. Its not even the money, although that hurts.

Does anyone else feel like this in similar circumstances, or feel they're responding irrationally but can't snap out of it?

You should make contact with your local Trading Standards Office without delay, you should not allow these people to get away with this disgusting form of extortion

Gary, a similar thing happened when the boiler in my house needed to be repaired. We called a repair service and they came out advertising a "free consultation". Turns out the consult is only free if they don't have to take the boiler apart to diagnose the problem. Needless to say, it was false advertising because how else are you going to check out a broken boiler, mental telepathy? X ray vision? The repairman spent 5 minutes with his spanner and charged 60 quid up front. If we have to pay 60 pounds regardless, then they have trapped you into using their service or else you just wasted 60 quid. Then he said it would be 70 quid per hour to repair it, and it should only take an hour. It actually took 2 hours 15 minutes, so we were charged for three hours. Plus the parts cost 80 quid. At the end of the day, we were charged 350 pounds for what amounted to one small valve being replaced. We argued the false advertising front and they took 60 off the bill.

It's infuriating that these companies take advantage of people who either don't know how to fix things around the house or don't have the time to get their hands dirty. I think they especially go after women, because they assume we will just say yes, and we're socialized to not know very much about mechanical equipment. The best way to deal with the problem is to speak to friends, family, neighbors, anyone you know who might recommend an honest plumber before emergencies strike. In the long run it saves the run around and tearing your hair out when the big companies try and screw you over.

I use a plumber who works for a franchise that has set prices for jobs. It isn't cheap but the price stays the same however long it takes to do the job (and it isn't that much more expensive than standard OK but 'will only take cash' plumbers.
Georgie, for my boiler I have a British Gas maintenance contract, the engineers are on salary so have no reason to overcharge (my last one wrote on 2 hours instead of 2.5, to save me money), the only problem with them is if it turns out you need a new boiler (or gas fire, or whatever) the ones they sell are expensive.
I may have spent more this way -- but probably not -- but I do know I won't get ripped off by cowboys or have to pay upfront or maybe even get threatened.

I do agree they usually target women.

Hey clemmati, I thought we had British Gas, but then when we tried to get through to them there was no answer. We were told this was because of a high demand for their services at that time. It was winter and lots of boilers busted. We went for three days with cold showers in winter until I finally said enough! I'm not splashing my armpits with ice water anymore! I want hot water now!

That being said, British Gas is probably easiest. ;)

Georgie I have heard of people having problems with them. I did twice. The first time was when I was my mother's carer, and I threatened them with exposure for leaving a sick woman in her eighties without heat in a cold winter... The next time, I rang and rang again till they sent someone out immediately. But normally, they are OK for me.

I had very good plumbers when I was in London -- I forgot that when I posted before -- I''ll see if they're still around. (Large company; guaranteed hourly rates; no demands for money upfront.)

Garye - I agree - talk to the Trading Standards people. I would be tempted to tell Pilico Plumbing that you are going to do that. Also, tell ANYONE else who is prepared to listen. Write an article for the local paper, send it to Pimlico inviting them to 'comment' before it goes to print.

It really is time to stamp on these blood-sucking low-lifes.

Yes, Tradiing Standards, also tell Pimlico Plumbing, and these people (who added Dell Computing to their list for me, they should add Pimlico)

yeah, garye, absolutely I always feel just that way in similar circumstances. to be serious, I think it's the "powerless" aspect _ that it's gross and grossly unfair but one can't do a d* thing about it! I feel physically sick, and angry, and frustrated, and ashamed that I fell for it, and sad because of the loss entailed, meanwhile taking myself to task additionally because I can't get past it. I stomp around glowering and trying to think up ways to retaliate and how to keep it from happening to others, and since I never come up with anything reasonable and practical, I feel sick, angry, frustrated etc over THAT, too! __ and then, though sure I'd finally put it behind me, it's guaranteed that I'll re-live every such instance in my life the NEXT time one happens! and i know that there WILL be a "next time."

Hey, I have a suggestion.... DON'T PAY IT.

Do you have a signed estimate for this amount? They might take you to court, but what evidence is there to prove you owe this amount?
Dude, you don't even need legal representation. I will represent you...

I'm in the same situation, they charged me for an hour, took 5 minutes to say that they couldn't do the work and I'd have to call them back in. I'm really annoyed. Stay away from Pimlico Plumbers!
