Oh my God...what a week!!!
It all started last weekend when I helped my mate stalk Justin Timberlake for a magazine he's writing for. So, yes yes, we saw him. Didnt actually speak to him though since his bodyguard was way too big and scary to surpass. yikes.
So then, on Tuesday I went to Cork to see the Flaming Lips. Man they were so good live. They throw such a great party. Orange balloons galore!
Wednesday we went to The Rock of Cashel to be tourists for the day.
Then Thursday I had a job interview. Longest interview ever...took 1 and a half hours. eeks.
So then on Friday I was settling down to thinking I wasnt going to be doing much for the weekend until, my mate rang me, told me to pack my bags, he got me a media VIP pass for Oxegen. For those of you who don't know what Oxegen is: its one of the best music festivals in the world.
So, Saturday I went to see:
Avril Lavigne, Delorentos, Justice, 2 Many DJs, Muse (best set ever!), Kings of Leon (they've all chopped their hair except for the drummer, sigh), Air and well I just can't recall who else. But it was great.

And on Sunday:
Bloc Party, CSS, DJ Shadow, The Cold War Kids, Arcade Fire, and Daft Punk.

IT WAS THE BEST WEEK EVER!

He was pretty flawless looking alright but was tiny! Then again, that could have been just cause the bodyguard was massive!

It's funny, when I've visited places like L.A. I've sometimes spotted stars, and I always thought, "Man, I expected him to be 6'5" but he's just a little guy!" That's weird that I expect celebrities to actually be as tall as they are on screen, larger than life, towering over my head, big powerful movie sound quality voices, and actually, they are around the same height as me.

Why do we assume that stars are like supernatural beings? They are just like us, only with fame and an entourage, and usually lots of money, yet we worship them and expect them to be ten feet tall. Kinda strange.

When I worked at NBC, I got to meet and work with all kinds of people I'd watched for years on television. Talk about myths meeting reality!!! Everyone I thought was tall was short (one guy -- anonymous for obvious reasons -- was about 4' 10"), and everyone I thought was short was tall. No one was as smart as I thought (they all had very smart producers, writers, and others working behind the scenes), and some (again, no names) were absolute imbeciles.

Despite what you hear in the rabid right-wing media, most everyone I worked with either flat-out Republicans or fairly conservative Democrats, and there wasn't a socialist in the house, so whether a correspondent was pro-choice or pro-life, they were still pro-global, unregulated, laissez faire, "free-market" capitalists.

But there was one guy, a living journalistic legend (since passed away), intelligent, witty, well-spoken, who fit the mythic image I had created of him perfectly, except for one thing: he absolutely stank of whiskey and cigars, constantly!!!

I was disappointed in some and very impressed by others when I got my first experience working for television news.

As for radio, well I have mostly been disappointed by those in the limelight - I do think one fella (who i consider a mentor) is exceptionally good at what he does - n he doesn't have an overblown ego like many do.

haha, this is kinda amusing. Have we all worked in media at one stage? I've met radio stars in a post production house I was workin in for a while. Again, they were all so small. But with people on radio you're perception is usually based on a thumbnail mid shot of them on some website. Well, it is for me.
I worked in a section of a tv station too and met some people but thought they all looked pretty much the same as my expectations.

Well it wasn't exactly an average week by any standards! Yeah, the mud was bad but like, who cares when you've got your wellies from Pennys eh? :p
In fact, I did at one stage get stuck in the mud, the mud was so deep it went past my wellies in one spot and 2 of my mates had to pull me out. I later proceeded to fall face down in the mud as my balance was worsening due to a steady alcohol intake over the weekend!
Always wear clothes you can just throw away when going to Oxegen.

no i turned down an opportunity to go because i wont be in the uk at that time.

lcd soundsystem is fookin groovy! but im afraid the smashing pumpkins are not what they used to be. i dont think darcy is back with the band, likewise the fella she used to date in the band is also absent. at least this is what i saw when i watched Live Earth.

I was taking the elevator downstairs and it stopped a few floors below
A nice lookin' gal stepped in and stood beside me. She asked me how I was doing, I said ok, and yourself, she said she was doing fine too.
Anyway, we got to the lobby and I went to the concierge desk and she walked out the front door.
I said to the doorman, 'hey, she looks like Rene Zelwegger'.
You can only guess what he said.
I could have had a nice chat with her during the few minutes in the elevator, but I thought she was just another broad.
                  Damn.
I've met a few more, but that's another days story!

I had dinner with the J-pop duo PUFFY (aka Puffy AmiYumi) without having any idea who they were. Don't care for their music, but at least I could have stolen their used napkins to sell on eBay had I known I was dining with international stars. :D

I've had a number of encounters with celebrities in my life, and it's usually wasted on me since it's often someone I don't know, don't recognize or couldn't care less about.

The most exciting was at age 5 when I met Kermit the Frog (with Jim Henson's hand stuck up his... well, anyway, it's no wonder Kermit says it's not easy being green).
