Just wondering if anyone has any idea why it has worked out this way?

What do you think the precipitating factors are?

A few reasons I can see:

      1. There are a few politically outspoken individuals driving the content in this direction.
      2. Politics is something people have very strong, deep rooted beliefs in. It's difficult not to talk about politics once the subject has been introduced.
      3. Politics creates an even bigger stir than say, religion, as politics has immediate and practical implications in our daily lives. People are much more forgiving and tolerant about each others religious beliefs.

And is it politics you're referring to, or are you referring to other topics, only tangentially related to politics, that are the cause of some controversy?

I've noticed that (certainly amongst the friends posts I see) there is a heavy bias towards politics and the religion/science battle over evolution along with global warming and it's poltical ramifications.

There are some very left wing members and there are some right wing members - along with a surprising number of people like me - in-betweeners. One thing I can't help but find bogglingly stupid, is the number of people who blindly follow left or right, just because it's a left or right issue, point of view, dogma.

In-betweeners can quite happily support (or oppose) policies from either side, based on the policies' merit. However in-betweeners do not shout the loudest. An earlier post suggested that (s)he who shouts the loudest is the one that is listened to - and supporters of both sets of claptrap do just that - hence the percieved political 'bias' on the site.

It might be prudent to note at this point, that the wisest people in history, have been the quiet ones. The loud ones tend to be the ones that start fights (those, and the idiots of course :o) ).

Steber2000 started it with the whole Woyano Motto voting thing. Voting naturally reminds one of politics! :P

Plus, without any new coin puzzles to work on, JV, what else are we geniuses to do? :D

i dont know if i necessarily agree with the ones who are the quietest are the wisest

many of my heroes who have stood up to challenge the norm, to challenge the status quo have not been quiet

and for that im thankful :)

It is often said that you should beware the quiet ones. Those that talk less and listen most have more facts to play with. This makes them wiser. You may find that many of your heroes were loud by proxy - the advisor behind them whispering advice.

When I think of quiet and wise I think of Ghandi and Jesus. If I allow a 'little' noise, I think of John Lennon.

Anyone who stands up to challenge the norm is going to have to be noisy. I wonder how quiet they were before they reached the point they needed to to be loud.

It's my view that some folk simply like to stir the pot, however outrageously and perhaps even the more outrageous the better. And others apparently must enjoy the resultant running verbal gunbattles and taking whatever potshots present themselves. It's all a great noisy wasteland, IMO, that somewhat gets in the way of seeing the nuggets amongst the dross. Me, I'm trying to ignore the noise, even if that means I'll miss an occasional nugget.

It bothers me, tho, since it often leads to name-calling and other denigrating comments. If too much continues, it will damage if not destroy Woyano _ and sometimes I wonder whether perhaps that's an intent, just to see if they can pull it off. It sometimes even seems that some have signed up under more than one name in order to post pseudo-support for foolish statements and expand the ridiculous arguments.

Moderators of the site should be able to tell if there are multiple accounts coming from a single IP address. "Open Space, Open Mind" should not include obvious fraud. In my opinion, this should count as an abuse, and the user should be banned.

i actually asked about that and from what i was told - it was okay if people signed up under numerous email addresses

LBP, I see. I think that's a really bad policy (I imagine you do too!), I'd have thought new people signing up could be really put off by it.

well yes, but it seems a short-sighted policy to me whatever happens. And as earz says, it could destroy Woyano.

If they were to only allow one account per user, and the posts were more quality rather then quantity, then, that will, I am sure, generate more interest from anyone outside who stumbles upon woyano.
The current content is just back and forth arguments.
How many people, maybe very interesting people, with some really interesting stuff to talk about, have wandered in, and ran back out?
I am sure The Woyano Team have those figures. Probably the reason behind this thread I am sure!
Politics is like medication. The right dosage can prove to be helpful, but when overdosed, can have a reverse effect.

Just to be clear. It's not possible to police a one account per user policy.

                                a) You cant use IP because lots of users may share the same IP. On AOL millions of users share the same IP.

                                b) Lots of users share the same machine. AKA Libraries & Internet cafes.

                                c) People can create new email addresses at will.

Ideally we would like each user to have only one account, and in an effort to ensure this we insist that each account has a unique email address - but as we all know it is possible to set up multiple email addresses.

Basically, we rely on the honesty of our users - and I think we are not alone in this - any community website is in exactly the same boat...

Woyano was started with people who are generally open minded, and had many intresting points to knowledge which was generally of high quality. Unfortunatly, woyano has been increasingly filling with ignorant people without knowledge and morals, and thus came to destroy what was starting to be a fantastic site for the exchange of knowledge in a rational and logical way.
Has woyano become more political? Not at all. The only difference is that the level of intelligence has decreased.

When Georgie posted a proposal about a possible Woyano community values statement, I mentioned a column by John C. Dvorak concerning "virtual communities." In part, he asks "Is there any way to weed out the fakes and the vandals." There are tons of posts in response as techies debate various answers, but as JV says, pretty much the answer is no. Pretty much there are ways around any barrier. Some may want to look into that point further, so here's the reference again:
                                    http://www.pcmag.com/arti...le2/0,1895,2000353,00.asp

In this instance, the goodies are in the responses, not so much in the column, but the column gives it context.

I read it. (Thank you.) It does seem almost impossible to do anything about the fakes (I was once on a forum that managed to block them by making everybody register and acting against impostors, but the company involved was prepared to do it, also a number of lawyers posted there and were ready to say, anyway, that they would act). But I found out from one of the comments there that we do have some weapons here, comments can be got rid of by 'thumbs down' ratings -- one or two of mine have gone, :( -- the thing is, I don't entirely approve of that.

pretty much everyone has control over their own woyano - and frankly that is a nice feature i for one appreciate :) (especially for those that just wish to harass)

as for just getting rid of someones post based on the fact they disagree with you and may even have a more informed position - well thats just censorship

Is arguing politics a problem? ... Many of the politically bent posts tend to be written with a preconceived ideal, notion, agenda. They are often very one sided and biased. The way Woyano is set up responding to a post adds to its popularity. I've seen the most politically biased members have demonstrated the tendency to be more interested in arguing then discussing any point of view. Some members here can hardly make a post without adding a contrary remark about the US president, current event, or political party. Is it a * Problem * if people only want to post their biased political dogma? I'm not interested in arguing about politics. Anything I'd write would not change a persons mind about there political agenda. If I make a direct comment about someone's point of view or post a direct challenge about the legitimacy of some politically biased statement or topic posted, it is likely to be perceived as a personal assault. None of which is very appealing to me an therefore if Woyano becomes primarily a political discussion forum it will be my conscious decision to avoid the site altogether.

Politics make me mad anymore , i used to be a CNN junky , it was like crack until i just had my fill of all the crap , its depressing yet addicting , the more you care about a certain subject the more you get mad or depressed , but no fear i shall not go out and eat the barrell of a handgun over all the depressing stuff, although i wish some politions would , its simple to me politics is power and the byproduct is money and to achieve each of these, people in power are willing to do and destroy anything, the middle class that built this country of mine , all the way to destroying a small country the size of cali , its crazy stuff man . But yet addicting never the less
