Should we implement an umbrella license?

Into each life some rain must fall.

You see, I live in Ireland. Summer is upon us and on our green shores we have not seen a dry day here for over a month. Now, this inevitably leads to people carrying umbrellas around. So when the drops start plumetting down there is a rush to get that umbrella out.

I see them as weapons in this case. Nobody gives a f**k about the person next to them, who has just had to duck and dive to avoid having an eye taken out.

There are a number of dangerous umbrella offences. Here are the most common:
  • The Launcher
The Launcher, is as described above. They lauch the umbrella without looking around them. Pretty much the principle of looking left and right before one crosses a busy road should apply here.
  • The Midget
People who are smaller than you and hold umbrellas tend to hit you at various parts of your body. Now, I'm not saying that the small people in our society should get wet but...you could get some sort of umbrella extension to lift the umbrella up higher. Or indeed, get a raincoat. Simple as...
  • The Twirler
This is the person who sharply turns around for whatever reason, and in the process manages to unleash a 360° attack on everyone in the extreme vicinity. Granted, fellow umbrella holders will have their own defence. But for those without an umbrella, they are not only getting wetter and wetter but are becoming more 'weathered' as they try to plunge through the streets aside a mass of 12pronged weapons.

Sticking an umbrella in someone's hand will see their common sense and empathy of anyone else trying to use the foot path go out the window in their selfish quest to make sure they are safe and dry at the expense of everyone else. So, you see my quest...should some sort of training be implemented for the umbrella holder?

I say; the winds of change are upon us. Let us sway with them towards a more caring umbrella society.

    love this post *LOL*

on a serious note - it seems like its so easy for people to forget their manners and at least in the culture i live in - it seems like people make the excuse that its the norm - or everyone else is doing it

like my example i posted on the other thread about comsumerism and selfish behavior - the people on their cellphones while being in line, or in their car - not paying attention to the rest of us!!!!

    how rude!

I was at the wrath of a few umbrellas yesterday, which drove me to write this post. But yeah, people are just too self-centred in general. I read that consumerism post and while I didn't read all the comments left I do think that one thing was overlooked in it: whoever posted it sees tv as a primal cause. i think we need to look outside the box: hello social networking sites where everyone is self- obsessed with how popular they are on them/ how many hits they get. But now I've gone off topic...

I hate it when one person with an umbrella is walking down the sidewalk towards you, and you have an umbrella too, and it's impossible to pass each other without somebody getting knocked in the face or otherwise pushed into oncoming traffic. That, or if you get a really pushy passerby, you get sideswiped into that massive gutter puddle as they rush past you at high speed. Humph.

actually... I usually... raise it up and then open the umbrella... especially if I'm in the car, I crack the door open... slip the umbrella up through the crack... and then slowly open it.

so luckly I have never had a killer umbrella attack. =) *runs off to watch singing in the rain to re-imagine it as a ninja action flick*

I can hear the trailer now... starting out with... "in a storm... no eye is safe! < insert swoosh sound here > "

I have one of those automatic umbrellas, push a button, ZAP! They should probably be banned :) but they're great.

Hey -- great post! The visuals are wonderful. This is really funny since the consequences aren't too serious. I shudder to think how people might behave in a real survival situation, though. Anyone watch the recent airing of "Super Comet -- After the Impact"?

I am constantly dodging umbrellas when out, I'm 6'2" , and midgets are a real walking hazard. I don't mind the weather. It flooded just up the road from here (Hull) I just went for a walk put my baseball cap on and watch the riverlevels at the sides of my flats. I even developed a new hobby- watch the floaty stuff, I saw allsorts flow past. Did you know gas cylinders can float??

I know exactly what you mean with the umbrella offenders! I nearly received a black eye while out in the city centre - straining elbows trying to open a stubborn umbrella in a virtual gale!!

I think umbrellas are banned at gigs...well at least to any of the ones I've been at. Although...you do get the odd umbrella ditched in the muddy grounds, which makes me wonder...how tight is security eh? Too bothered about seeing how much booze they can confiscate that they let WEAPONS pass. tcuh!
