The idea that the earth is over-populated is simply a perspective which is limited to urban idealogies and thoughts. There is an over-abudance of land which exists on this planet, where by there are huge areas of land which contain no humans, and has not for hundreds of years (meaning not highly explored). I personally have travelled in such places, and can attest to the natural beauty which exist here, but also the wide amount of land that is not utilized. Even if the earth tripled in population, we would not be able to complete coat the earth in human.
So what is the urban idealogy and thought? This is an enviroment inwhich all inhabitants grow up surrounded by people and this is where their knowledge and experiences in life are obtained. Based on amount of people which exist, villages, townes, cities and mega cities interconnect to each other through mass transportation and telecommunication systems to share this knowledge and experiences . To flourish the cities, products are traded to different cities and also to the local citizens of the city.
By communicating and thinking only in the terms of the urban enviroment, thought becomes overly trival as the survival skills necessary for life on this planet are essentially lost. In such an environment it is often the case of the formation of classes - In which class will define the position in that society you will have. This will inturn effect your thinking as you play within the different levels, of what urban thought would suggest is existance.
A vital part of this existance is the trade of goods (normally done (purchased) with a piece of paper marked with seal of someone in the upper classes). To entertain these large masses of people, entertainment is provided with media (tv, radio, movies, magazines) and also with drugs of assorted kinds (beer, crack, herion, coffee, tobacco). Due to men and women being within close proximity of each other, mating rituals are constant depending on the class you exist within society. Society because of this degrades at an expedant rate, which was shown by studies of rats which are in a box which is over-populated - some become cannibals, some try to fight all the other rats, some try to'crawl into a corner' and sit stagnet, helpless, unable to think; others become homosexuals while others some try to get out.
From an outside perspect the problems within are only part of the problem, the true problems, at least from an enviromental impact perspective is that cities are poorly designed for support of a mass amount of people. In fact to abandoned the low-impact idealogy whichin cities is part of the problem. The number of people which any square meter of land could hold could be greatly increased using modern technology, and this could ease the problems of urban settlement development, which often causes strain upon the citizens of cities, which in turn gives rise to various extreme ideas and notions.
It is important to note the importance of propaganda in this environment as the ability to control masses of people will ultimatly determin the fate of cities. With the current design of modern society methods to play on people's fears and desires this causes people to further degrade the environment they live in.
A part of low-impact living is being clean and one with nature. Modern societies have been built up upon processes which are overly harmful to society. This includes the use of toxic, synthetic chemicals and material and toxic natural chemicals and materials, such as Diatoms (oil). It is these toxins which are in the air, which give rise to increased female populations.
The heavy use of electromagnetic signals (ie. radio) is known by the world health organization as to the cause of most cancers. The failure to use harmful technology against yourselves, would provide a much better enviromnet, for you and future generations of you.
So what is the solution to a horrible environment? Other than the obvious, don't live in a dump, you may wish to consider consulting with those with the highest level of class within your societies, to ask them to not harm you and your fellow urbanites anymore. But nothing will be done to rationally solve the environmental problems by these people, as they profit and do not truely care for the planet, nor for you. You are simply a consumer and not bright enough to see truth, for you have been conditioned to have the mentality of a child, completly lost and dependant on them.
So how will this develop? Using your child like minds against you, they will soon push taxes - additional costs upon the citizens of cities to pay for the damage which has been caused by your master's faulty design. Soon you will give up any rights, your wage slave forefathers fought for, and died for. You will allow for sole rulers to overtake you in all ways, including population control.
