United States Senator of Louisiana (Republican), David Vitter, has admitted and apologized for his "past sin" of hiring of prostitutes.  Vitter's phone number was included in a published list of phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, a company owned and run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the "D.C. Madam", which is accused by the U.S. government of being a prostitution service.

While Vitter was calling for Bill Clintons resignation for having an affair, a year later as phone records show, he called Palfreys service at least five times, of which two of the calls were made during House roll call.

He is also being accused by Jeanette Maier "The Canal Street Madam" of being a customer on more than one occasion.  Vitter denies this allegation.

According to federal prosecutors, they have identified her business as being a $300 per hour brothel.

In May 1999, Vitter replaced Bob Livingston after Livingston resigned - due to an adultry scandal.

Why does this have to be a Republican thing and not just a stupid senator thing? I happen to think ALL politicians are slimebags.

BTW, I couldn't care less about how much John Edwards spends on haircuts.

the difference is that the republican party went after clinton and tried to get him to resign

THE DIFFERENCE IS THEY IMPEACHED HIM IN THE HOUSE FOR LYING ABOUT HAVING AN AFFAIR - MEANWHILE THIS GUY WAS INVOLVED IN PAYING FOR PROSTITUTES WHICH IS ILLEGAL

what clinton did, was not illegal

            HYPOCRITS!

I'm not going to argue against the hypocrit thing, because there ARE hypocrits in the Republican party. At the same time, there are hypocrits in the Democratic party!

People tend to stand up for their own -- and that is hypocritical. But everybody does it.

The spin I've heard on the Clinton thing is that because he was trying so hard not to let things get out that he was willing to lie about it. So, the thinking goes, he may be the kind of person that could put himself in compromising positions, possibly putting the country at risk.

I don't really buy into that per se. Convicting somebody of something they MIGHT do isn't the way our system works. On the other hand, lying about it was a really dumb move.

Whether or not it's anybody's business about these sex scandals is a whole 'nother discussion!

I'm just trying to take a step back and be objective here.

Yes -- I am a registered Repubilican, and generally vote with the party. However, there are plenty of things I'm not happy about. I am a conservative first. But I try not to let this stop me from understanding other points of view.

the point is - the republican party tries to legislate morality - all the while doing things like this

The irony is not lost on me here. You could also make the same point about the Catholic Church, or evangelicals, or just about any other church you can think of.

We are ALL fallible. In my opinion, though, I don't think we should give up on trying to do what we think is the right thing because we sometimes fail.

Heck, I tell myself all the time that I should behave in certain ways, and then screw up. :-)

well you would be a hypocrit and a fool if you judged another man for having an affair and then went out and paid for sex

Well, that's true. My disagreement is that you were implicating the entire Republican party's values, based on the actions of one man. If you want to talk about the hypocrisy of this individual, I have no problem with that.

I'm missing something here. I don't care if a politician goes off on holiday and has rampant se....relations.... with everything and anything that'll let him/her. (S)he could be cavorting with entire brothels, the full client list of a gay nightclub or even all the animals in the zoo. As long as (s)he can do their political job well, I don't see that its any of our business.

A 'sex scandal' is invented by the media. It boggles me that Americans (land of the free), and not the British (land of stiff upper lips and starch) can be such silly prudes at times.

So a politician hires a hooker - So What??

its a bit different when its a politician who tried to legislate morality and ethics

Hmm , we British do have our sex scandals, but only if they are denying their sexuality. There was the case of an MP caught red handed with a young man in a *compromising* situation , he then went on to deny he was gay, despite credit card receipts showing he had been doing this for years. The wife left him, the party whip was withdrawn, and he left in disgrace. Another case, MP caught in bed with bloke- turns around and says -yup I'm gay, the Mrs leaves him, the papers make a big hoohar, Mrs forgives him and gets a big divorce settlement, bloke moves in with bloke and all is well....needless to say MP 1-labour party(macho miner party), MP2 conservative(full of poofs).

Yes, it is if they deny it, these days. Er, MP1? What about Allan Roberts, Labour MP for Bootle, macho working class constituency, caught in Berlin tied to a tree, National Labout made threatening noises, Bootle Labour said, he's a good MP, you can **** off? I remember a gay friend telling me about that -- a Conservative, but he left the party when Thatcher was elected -- in joy and happiness. (That gay friend is pretty macho, he once thumped someone homophobic -- once that I know of... .)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_Roberts (seems 'tied to a tree' may be slightly wrong, still)

and what about the Labour Party Secretary of State for Wales who would have been able to keep his job if he hadn't lied twice?

but I think if a British heterosexual or gay or bi politician went on and on about Family Values while paying prostitutes, s/he'd be in trouble, Blair's rule apparently was, it didn't matter what they did so long as they weren't hypocrites, so long as they didn't tell other people what to do.

Luckily, our lot avoid going on about Family Values, and though David Cameron's started going on about The Importance of Marriage, he also supports Boris Johnson (if you don't know about Boris, you should!, he's hilarious)

-- on your side of the pond, there was also that Family Values and Keep The Web Family-Safe male pol who was simultaneously chatting up male pages...

Welll, the subject of all this returned to work earlier this week (7-16 or 7-17, I think), with private apologies but little public. apparently repentance cures. sounded rather like someone on stringer or oprah except more subdued.

i don't see any report saying he pledged never to do it again, though. nor any dealing with the hypocrisy of which LBP speaks.

but (tongue in cheek) did you see his WIFE? whut a horse! No wonder he ... erm ....
