Lauded by Alexander McCall Smith, of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency fame, it's a delightful and intelligent series about an independent and slightly eccentric woman detective in post-WWI London.
The stories are suspenseful and engaging - and I learned a lot of history along the way.
Especially compelling is her sensitive yet unflinching portrayal of the lingering physical and mental wounds and disabilities sustained by the English soldiers, nurses, and others after WWI.
Sadly resonant, still today.
I wouldn't recommend starting this series until you've got some serious time to spend reading. Save yourself a trip and get all four books at once! If anyone's heard anything about a release date for a fifth, drop me a line.
