I had a dream the other night that I was with a group of friends playing dodgeball with hotdogs in a school gymnasium. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what it means, but I can't stop thinking about it. Maybe this will help get it out of my head.

Your dream reminds me of a story: Two much younger friends and I had gone to the small hippy-oriented former copper-mining town of Jerome for an all-day blues festival. Late evening after many beers and much hilarity, we adjourned to a small oddly located cafe (all things in Jerome are oddly located LOL) only to discover it was within minutes of closing. No food. Conversation led to the discovery that the proprietress had just that day received straight from San Francisco two loaves of her fave sourdough bread. With sly gleams in our eyes, we began cajoling her to sell us one of the loaves _ and ultimately succeeded (for something like $10, but we were having fun, after all). We then set out jovially down the hillsides _ throwing the loaf among us like a football you know, "ok now, go 'waaaaay out for the loooonnng one ... umph, ooops." . What ultimately happened to the loaf, I don't recall, other than that we never did eat it. ~~~ I still see the guys, occasionally, and the incident is always recalled with lots of laughter.

There now, something to replace your dream in your mind *s*

But apparently you will, heh, heh. :-)

Come to think of it, playing dodgeball with weiners might be kinda painful...

Do dreams tell (or foretell) us anything? Or are they, as I suspect, just the stuff that filters through to the concious during sleep?

The theory is, that sleep is necessary to allow your brain to sift through the stimuli it has recieved during the day. That 'important' stuff is committed to long-term memory; trivial stuff is discarded.

When you're awake, your senses block out a huge proportion of what you experience - if it didn't you'd be overwhelmed by sensation and be functionally useless. So sleep allows the short-term memory data to be processed. What you 'dream', is spillage. Have you noticed that you only remember dreams you wake up in the middle of?

This idea may make the whole process appear scientific or non-romantic, somewhat robotic even. But it does allow you to stop wasting time pondering the meanings of drivel, freeing yourself up to live a little.
