Why are Americans more uptight about things like this?

BERLIN (Reuters) - A mysterious blonde paid a visit to a petrol station shop in the small eastern German town of Doemitz on Sunday -- wearing nothing but a pair of golden stilettos and a thin gold bracelet.

The tall, slender woman strolled into the shop in the town of Doemitz on the warm afternoon and bought cigarettes, petrol station employee Ines Swoboda told Reuters on Monday.

"I wasn't surprised because she's come in naked before -- she's a very nice woman," Swoboda said, adding none of the other customers were bothered. The woman could have faced charges of creating a public disturbance if anyone had complained.

A quick-witted customer did, however, snap pictures of the woman believed to be about 30 years old as she walked back to a waiting Ferrari and climbed into the passenger seat. Several of those photos appeared in the German media on Monday.

In America, this woman would have been arrested before she got her gas cap off. LOL

    I wouldn't be uptight about it :-)

Easy answer -- it's our Puritan roots. We're headed in the other direction, though. All you need to do is look at the media over the last 50 years and compare what has been considered acceptable over time.

Apparently, walking around naked in public places isn't the norm for Germans, either -- or this wouldn't have made the news. :-)

Actually the Germans are very fond of nudity - as you wld know if you had ever visited European beaches. OK - perhaps not in the kaufenstrasse. Not in the smart city streets of Cologne or Bonn or Berlin. But at our (French) holiday beach in a little fishing village, the Germans head for what is known among the locals as the "dangerous" beach. Not because of naked German bottoms but because of the very soft, almost quicksands and very strong currents. We were surprised by the ubiquitous 'white' bathing costumes when first strolling along the safer reaches by the dunes many years ago. Duh - as long as they had their backs to us! We fell abt laughing - we're British and embarrassed but not disgusted. The French ignore them as they, after all, are the model God used for the human race, so look down on everyone else :) The Germans take it seriously, so no sniggering please!

Perhaps you have a much more narrow minded notion of media than what I am referring to. What media, specifically, are you referring to as a joke?

First of all, when I say media -- I'm not referring just to news outlets. I'm talking about all media -- TV shows of all kinds, movies, magazines, internet, podcasts, etc. The values of society, including what we find acceptable and unacceptable, are one aspect of our culture that is reflected in this media. Just compare the Ozzie and Harriet values portrayed in the 50's compared to what we see today. Our society, and our media influence one another.

some people still have ozzie and harriet type values and some people do not

i dont believe that you can tell what values the american society has based on tv shows, movies, etc.

and our media is a joke- whether it be the evening news - or primetime television

I think the professor I had in my "American Popular Cultural History" class would be disappointed to hear that his entire career has been based on an ill-conceived notion. I'll break the news to him gently.

Im actually watching a show about the fact that in the 50s there were beatniks, pot smokers, and an opposite culture to the one that was on television.

this is exactly what i was referring to! :)

the reason why many would be uptight and why she would be arrested is because many of our laws are based on bible thumping beliefs

          lets be honest here

We in the UK have our own problems with nudity - but secretly I think we all prefer to giggle in the tradition of saucy seaside postcards. Our most famous promoter in the cause is The Naked Rambler (see link below). Personally, I'm a bit with Queen Victoria - as long as it doesn't frighten the horses!

              http://nakedwalk.org/

PS - If you're male, don't do it in the Artic - yr penis could get frostbite and drop off according to a doctor giving advice on a TV programme about an expedition to the North Pole.

LBP -- I appreciate the fact that you are for personal liberties (civil unions, naked bike rides, whatever). Certainly, though, there must be some point in possible human behavior where you would draw the line?

I first regarded this post in a joking fashion because I could not take the content seriously. But it has made me review my thoughts on the subject.

I find that I really have no problem with nudity "in the streets" as it were, as a general principle. But the fact that most people seem to prefer to adorn themselves with clothes and/or jewellery and other artifacts seems to indicate much more than a simple biblical attitude to nakedness. Let alone protection against the elements. Although youth and beauty are always admired and often feared, particularly for their sexual charisma, I rather like the idea that all shapes and sizes and ages can be more realistic and accepting of their humanity in the shape of their bodies. What's to be ashamed of?

If ya got it, flaunt it !!!

I was in Colorado a couple of years ago and there was a fun case going on in the newspapers at that time. A bloke had been seen by his neighbour wandering about in his own house, without benefit of clothes to cover his shame. The neighbour was appalled, aghast and flabberghasted apparently and the bloke got arrested. Finally I think the case was dropped, but the bloke - who was not American by birth - undertook to follow local custom and not frighten any more horses.

Horses, eh? We're not all hicks out here in Colorado :-) We're not all prudes, either. I can't tell you how many times we've gone skinnydipping in the back yard (OK -- it's been at night). Had a fantastic party involving some nudity at the old house (see my birthday posting). Honestly, this is another example of someone on the extreme end of things, and I don't think represents the majority around here. I think most people would probably have laughed or just ignored it.

I remember a case as well, about 2 years ago, where the people's backyards joined each others. When the nudist moved in, he had 10 foot tall fences put in so that he could sunbathe or other wise walk around nude as he pleased in his backyard without offending any of his neighbors. As it turned out, when the neighbors sat on their decks, they could still see over the fence and decided to sue the man.
Obviously, we must have respect for the others around us, but when does our home become ours with no one to answer to for what we do inside of it?

oh man, I could add a few stories here as far as obnoxious neighbours who stick their noses where they don't belong. it's hard to so when our homes become ours with no one to answer for what we do inside of it. I don't see a whole lot of people really respecting the space and time of others anymore. In the community I live, all you see are noses pressed to windows! And all you hear are endless moaning opinions of what those busy noses think about it. I used to think that living in a city vs a small town would change that in a big way, but when my brother moved to guelph for a few years I found out in short order that it doesn't seem to matter where you are anymore, it's like it everywhere. If everyone has their own opinion, they also have their own opinion of "normal" What each person to their own does, is usually defined as normal to them. But then, that's just my opinion..

I think most people would say that as long as its not harming anyone else, then its their own business. It's defining what constitutes as "harming anyone else" that's the real sticky issue, since people have different opinions on what is or isn't harmful. Every society has to come to some concensus where to draw the line. And no matter where you draw that line, there will ALWAYS be people who are unhappy about it.

Isn't that something? People always say that they know movies are fake or that you can't believe the things you see on tv, yet I would be willing to bet a paycheck that most of those people were just waiting for her to magically wake up like it was a soap opera.
Although, they do say that there's 3 types of people in a crisis situation. Type A: the kind who react and are typically the "hero"; Type B: the kind who freeze and all knowledge or common sense escapes them; and Type C: the kind who panic.
Aparently, LBC, you are Type A :)
