The gist of this story is that some research group (paid for by the British Health Department) did a study on the relationship between pot and mental illness.
They found a correlation, but can't say for sure that one causes the other: "The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known. 'There could be something else about marijuana users, like their tendency to use other drugs or certain personality traits, that could be causing the psychoses',Zammit said.
And yet, you've already got people sounding the alarm and taking action:
"'I've reached the end of the road with these kinds of studies,' said Dr. Robin Murray of King's College, who had no role in the Lancet study. 'Experts are now agreed on the connection between cannabis and psychoses. What we need now is for 14-year-olds to know it.'"
I'm not condoning drug use. I just wanted to point out another example of alarmist mentality at work.

an example is that retardo study released this week that if you have friends who are overweight you are likely to gain weight as well
stupid
If someone said that there was a study that showed that eating bacon after 4PM would decrease cholesterol. Then a lot of people would listen to it and eat bacon for dinner every night.
When it comes to health then people would believe anything.
As far back as 1988, the CHILDRENS Encyclopaedia (Pears) said: "The main danger from Marijuana appears to be that the search for it may lead the seeker into places where other, more dangerous drugs, can be found"
I have known several people, who have smoked pot all their adult lives and are not, nor have they ever been, interested in anything harder. These people normally (not all of them) eschew alcohol, preferring to be stoned than drunk. It was explained to me once that if you're stoned and a crisis happens, you can apparently 'straighten out', deal with the crisis and then relax into being stoned again. With alcohol you're totally useless (and therefore dangerous or in danger) in a crisis. It;'s a different lifestyle completely and generally totally non-intrusive into other lifestyles.
It annoys me intensely that the assumption is made that pot-heads are either automatic junkies or destined to become one.
Which is patently bollocks.
hehehe
I've been smoking marijuana for years now, and does someone have the nerve to say that I am psychotic? ME? The great Paloooka, world famous author, raconteur, and scientist? Hah!!! I am the picture of mental health and emotional stability!!! You never see me getting upset, do you? Well, DO YOU??? Answer me, DAMMIT!!! I'm sick of you all ignoring me!!!
PAY ATTENTION TO ME, DAMMIT!!!
you funny
You will perhaps have noticed that I have not heretofor made any derogatory comments re your posts. I know others have but I have refrained from doing so because I believe (despite not being a 'left leaning radical liberal' whatever one of those is - in fact, I take exception to being called one in such derisory fashion) everyone has a right to their voice. All opinions have a right to be heard, even if they're wrong.
However it does now seem obvious that you are labouring under the misconception that you're quite bright. I do not know whether you believe in God or not, but if you do, then you should be aware that your belief must include the fact that God made pot, just like He made stinging nettles, black widow spiders and sharks. None of which are 'evil' in and of themselves. Whether you believe in God or not, nothing is 'evil' in and of itself.
One final point - you do not have (nor has anyone else) the right to denigrate anything they do not understand. As the saying goes 'Don't knock it if you haven't tried it'.
Mark - I assume you're joking. But in case you're not, let me just point out that Man is responsible for all the worlds problems. And generally the stupid ones at that. Remember that marijuana was brought to the masses by people whose message was Peace, and Love. It's a pity that there are more stupid people than bright ones on this planet - if that were not so, and the men and women throughout the ages who have cried for (and bled for) Peace and Love would not have been destroyed by something far more evil than the odd spliff: ignorance and greed.
I think that you will find that, whether people believe in God or not, the best amongst us are those who follow the commandments, not out of fear, but out of the understanding that they make sense. And nowhere does it say in those commandments, 'thou shalt not smoke pot'.
For a moment there, I had this vision. An army poised for war, sharing a reefer or two - and when the order comes to charge, none of them could be arsed. Violence and evil does not come from the stoned, it comes from those who are not stoned.
The experience was so terrifying that I never smoked marijuana again - something that was actually easy for me since I didn't really enjoy smoking that crap.
But probably that's not the marijuana alone that causes things like that to happen because I have seen people who smoke it everyday and they never experienced anything like I did. I believe the cause of the problem might be marijuana added to some particular kind of brain. So, even if not everybody is vulnerable to this, I still think it's important to conduct studies like this to prevent those who are unfortunate enough to smoke pot and feel like I've felt.
Hey you know AdGuy always gets the last word! ;)
