 Secret Sanction

Sean Drummond is a maverick attorney who cloaks his expertise with smart-mouthed self-deprecation and cynicism.
One of the Army's most brilliant lawyers, he's also seen his share of infantry fighting, and when a military scandal causes a global outcry, the brass pick Drummond to head the investigation. In a remote war at Europe's center, somebody has committed a cold-blooded massacre--thirty-five victims shot in the head at close range, execution style. The world media blames a U.S. Special Forces team assigned to the region. But Drummond can't take on faith the testimony of the accused Green Berets who protest their innocence. Then, in quick succession, a mole inside Drummond's team leaks information to the Oval Office . . . an ambitious reporter digs up a dangerous secret from Drummond's past . . . and a brutal murder takes place alarmingly close to home.Forced into an uneasy alliance with Captain Lisa Morrow, the Army's best defense lawyer, Drummond uncovers a vast conspiracy of frightening proportion. And the deeper he probes, the more he discovers how duty, honor, and country can clash-in ways both deadly and heartrending. With richly layered characters and a mesmerizing plot that moves at breakneck speed, Secret Sanction casts a searching light into the darkest corners of the human psyche.
(poached from Google as I couldn't remember all the details of the plot)
Mortal Allies
The return of Sean Drummond to the nastiest of cases. A young Korean soldier is dead , he was a Katusa - a native fighting in a USA uniform. The soldier has been found strangled, raped and sodomised after death, this young korean is also the son of the Korean Defence Minister a bona fide war hero and Korea is now up in arms.
Sean has been hand picked by the civilian defence attorney for the soldiers accused of this ugly crime, unfortunately the defence attorney is one Katherine Carlson an old classmate who Drummond loathes. She was his college nemesis, they mix together like a firework factory and a flame thrower.
Drummond , career Army, lawyer and general all round hetero good guy is non too happy with being assigned to this case, with a bunch of homos and lesbians as his co-councils and his defendant also being gay this case is gong to test all of his skill, patience and tolerance. With the odd stacked against him he starts work on the case only to find it is pretty much air tight, his client is unresponsive and his co-councils are keeping secrets.
As the plot progresses a disturbing thought springs to Seans mind and he contacts the local spook station for verification. What happens next is the stuff of nightmares and the whole USA_Korean alliance now lies in the balance, can Sean put it all together and act before the peninsula errupts in all out war??
Well after the first novel I didn't think that Brian could chose a more controvertial topic than War crimes, how wrong could I be?
The don't ask don't tell policy running in the armed forces is just such a taboo subject, in such a testosterone filled environment what place is there for a shirt lifter is the question posed in this book.
To say it was a good book would be a mild way of putting it, well written, with a plot most films would love to try to portray, thisone will pick you up and put you down breathless.
Sean is as irreverent as ever, his side-kick the formidable Imelda Pepperfield is still gnarly and hard bitten and the prose flows like a glacier stream.
An excellent court room/detective novel that puts A Few Good Men back in second place.
