What 's in a name? Be it your first name surname or nickname. Does your name reflect the culture at the time you were born? (ie, radical 60's) What influenced your parents in their choice of names? Were they religious or did they simply pick a name that was popular at the time? Does your name say anything about your parents or family background or ethnic origin?

Surnames can allude to the occupations, while others hint to the location of your family.

Did you end up w/ a name that doesn't automatically indicate your sex such as Leslie  Kim Tracey Lindsay or Sydney ? Did you run into any problems as a child w/ that name?

Queenie is a nickname Ive had since the age of 3 and it was a play on my given name Corinne, my uncle gave it to me and Ive fallen back on it several times and Im always surprised when folks think I've chosen the name and therefore I must think Im a member of royality! Far from it, so whats in your name?

My name is Alistair Wiseman. Alistair comes from Alexander and means leader, Wiseman is an old Scottish name and actually comes from the name Angus (coincidentally my middle name) in the highlands, where the last name denoted the area where we were from, rather than family lineage.

I got my first names because in my family it was decided that the boys got Scottish names, and the girls English ones. I have brothers Andrew Robert, Hamish Stuart, and Iain William, and sister Susan Josephine! I think I got a reasonable deal! lol

The name Armitage Shanks has long been synonymous with quality British Bathrooms. The company’s roots can be traced back to 1850 when the first sanitaryware was manufactured. This was at a time when few properties had mains water pumped to them, there was no water borne sanitation system and hot water was a luxury enjoyed by the very rich.

The company that became Armitage Shanks was founded in 1817 by Thomas Bond in Armitage, Staffordshire. The Armitage "sanitary pottery manufacture" became a successful UK toilet manucturer. In 1969 Armitage merged with Shanks Holdings Limited, a competing "sanitary engineering company" established at Barrhead near Glasgow, Scotland in 1878, producing the famous brand name Armitage Shanks. In February 1999 Armitage Shanks became part of the American Standard group of companies.

And then I came a long and messed all that up. :)

                Moosetracks: my favorite ice cream.

Tornado: one of many nick names describing my personality when I'm not under stress.

                Thorough bred: see tornado

Red (red forman): due to both my hair colour, and to my lack of tolerance for many things and my choice of words describing said things. (see that 70's show)

Dusty: (received in junior high) describing me when ever playing one of many rough sports (rugby, field hockey, ice hockey, dirt biking, football, soccer, ect.) . I was usually covered head to toe in dirt, mud, or grass stains.

Sorry that I am not as historically interesting as Artimage Shanks, but we can't all be about plumbing.

As for my given name, my sister wanted to name me after her babysitter. It could have been worse. I could have been named after my Aunt Wahltroubt.

Snak - comes from the mispronounciation of my surname by a friends' 4 year old son. Collectively (before my divorce of course) we were known as 'the Snax' in honour of this (along with our friends the 'Joneses' and the 'Gilberts', which were obviously easier to say). If Snax was a collective noun, it made sense to adopt Snak as the singular.

my original VIP name is E*...pronounced e-star

my "real" first name is Esther, and I made the E* out of a nickname my dad had has for me, he just calls me "ster" which means "star" in dutch....

will respond to Es as well, and have been known to sign emails with either E* or even S, as an abbreviation of Es

my workmates called me charlie beerc*nt for a while cos of a joke i texted to alot of them...the joke is...

a man goes into a bar and sees a girl and starts talking to her and asks her what her name is... she replied saying that its Carmen, which suits her because she likes Cars and Men...

so the man introduces himself as Charlie Beerc*nt

i was even good to cover up the word c*nt because even though its a common word used in ireland...i hear it causes offence outside of ireland...ohh how i love using it in american bars lol

You are correct Mark. That particular word can get you slapped in North America. Funny how words are like that. Fag is another one that asks for trouble. In Europe it means a smoke or cigarette. Here, it is an impolite term for homosexuals. I remember in high school, I had a teacher from England, and she would tell us stories of her youth. At one point she was talking about the evils of smoking, and in trying to relate to us, she said that she and her friends used to go "out back and fag out." She didn't understand the intense silence that followed.

Well my real name is Lesley. My father named me after his close friend who happened to have a baby boy a month before i was born and she called her son after my father - William (althought this was not his birth name as he was given an english name by the missionaries - oh i have a interesting family history, trust me!) ANYWAY....my name was always spelt wrong, eg. Leslie and i never got mistaken for being male, except recently when someone at work was expecting a male to turn up on the first day at my new job! Haha turns out they're desperate and dateless!

But if i were a boy my name was going to be Arthur! Im glad im a girl.....although sharing the same name as the man who invented guinness aint so bad hehehe....The name Lesley is english and means 'Ruler of the Grey Fortress* whatever that represents??!!!

I love Mark's joke btw......if i had to give myself a name for the things i love the best.....it would be Lesley Anythingirish hehe......God i miss the Emerald Isle......WTF did you guys do to me over there????????

I have been given many nicknames some charming some not...but my maiden name has even more history behind it but im too stuffed to type anymore LOL....

I'll come back another time and do a speil on my VIP chat names LMAO

It always surprises me when people fail to get the joke in this name! lol. You'd think that the picture was something of a give-away! Plus I occasionally waffle about being an undead antelope... but then maybe Vlad the Impaler hasn't reached the parts other fables might have reached... though that would be odd.. what with the shape of my horns n all! lmfao Maybe i should bite more necks instead of nuzzling? lol

My surname is Irani. Since my ancestors lived in Iran in around 1450 .
We are called Zoroastrians. Ones that follow Zoroaster, the prophet.
After the muslim invasion we were confronted with the option of converting to Islam or leaving Iran. We left and arrived on the shores of India. We got of the boat and approached the local king who obviously didn't speak the same language we did and so in an attempt to signal to us that his land was full and had no room for us, he brought out a glass filled to the brim with milk.
One of our elders went back to his boat and came back to the king with a clenched fist and put it over the glass of milk and slowly allowed it to open. He dropped sugar into the milk signifying a perfect blend. Assimilation if you will...
we were allowed into india and that's how we got our surname Irani, meaning the one's that came from Iran. There is no surname like Irani in iran itself. In Iran we had different surnames according to our clan or occupation or area where we stayed.
My first name is Karl. No interesting story there.
