Columbia Dean: We'd Welcome Hitler

A Columbia University dean said the school would let Adolf Hitler to speak on campus.

"If he were willing to engage in a debate and a discussion, to be challenged by Columbia students and faculty, we would certainly invite him," John Coatsworth, dean of the School of International and Public Affairs, told Fox News.

Columbia has drawn intense criticism for agreeing to let Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad give a lecture on campus.

Columbia has a history of providing a forum to provocative speakers. It once welcomed Hitler's ambassador to the campus.

Then-President Nicholas Murray Butler invited Nazi Germany's U.S. ambassador, Hans Luther, to speak at Columbia in December 1933, triggering a student revolt. Butler then held a cocktail reception for Luther.

======================================================================================================

And now he's back peddaling from that comment.

What I want to know is how this is going to be a "debate & discussion" when he will be the one screening the questions being asked.

What a crock of s***t.

it would be nice to hear his side i guess lol...but in all serious...hitler in some ways was a genius with how he convinced people of his ways and beliefs...which as we all know are very wrong...he was a powerful speaker and im sure he would give an interesting debate on certain stuff...freedom of speech right? lol

It's not likely to be very hygienic, bringing Hitler's corpse to the rostrum, of course in reality it would be a bucket full of ashes, technical problems for Columbia.

            just as an afterthought...

smartttman listed a few (or rather, a LOT) of very true and nasty things about mr Hitler...

now think of this....how many parallels can you see with the current US government?

or is that just me being cynical...

kookymonstir, sorry to tell you, you can't read.

esther, I think the real reason people are so pissed off with Coatsworth is, he said there were lots of places in the US where Hitler would be welcome.

Did anyone else watch it yesterday? It was scary and nauseating to listen to the applause given by the students. They should have just given him the key to New York. ~add sarcasm here~

The truly sad thing is if a conservative speaker was up there speaking the students would shout him or her down and boo them off the stage. So much for an exchange of ideas, huh. No I didn't see it nor would I. Why would you want to watch a bunch of bullshit propaganda made to order for the idiot left and the news media, all willing accomplices to our own destruction.

And not one damn elected official has come out and condemned this. Well, other than Duncan Hunter.

I'll tell ya something, at this point I think Bush should just go over to the Democratic party. He acts more like one of them than a Republican.

There is freedom of speech and there is freedom to not listen to it. The problem is Adminisdad (or whatever) is catering to a few useful idiots on the left who will put creedance in what he says instead of telling him to stuff it. Then use his hate filled propaganda to try and shape public policy.

thing about freedom of speech is that sometimes you hear things you rather hadnt....and even things you yourself cannot conform to...

this is the price we have to pay for democracy....even the voices of the most sick people have to be heard...so in that respect I stand up for freedom of speech...everyone SHOULD be able to voice their opinions..and just because it doesnt happen to be the opinions YOU have, you shouldnt ban them from speaking at all...sounds like censorship to me...

I know I know, that is not what you all meant n everything..

oh and Kooky? We here in Holland KNOW mr Hitler was evil beyond words....we've lived under his occupation for more than 5 years...familymembers of mine have been bombed...doesnt give us the right though to ban them from speaking.

Dont get me wrong, I believe very much in freedom of speech. how else will you know what evil intentions are about in people's minds. I just dont think he should be WELCOMED here at a major university on our soil while his agents are arming insurgents and killing American and Iraqi soldiers and civilians all the while preaching some bullshit propaganda. He can stuff it and take it back to Iran. He talks out of both sides of his mouth depending on whether he has his blood thirsty mobs of fundamentalists in front of him, or a bunch of placating, peace at any cost, liberal cowards.
