$db->get_results times out when reading large data

I'm just wondering if anyone has this problem. I'm converting a poorly designed site to use the smarty class and ezsql db class but whenever I use the get_results function it runs into a problem and I believe it's because the data is too large (33,000 records). using mysql_query("select ...") it gets the 33,000 records and displays them without a problem.

I feel like this is one of those problems thats pretty easy to fix but i'm low on caffeine and my brain isnt functioning well right now.
