I found this essay really interesting. Especially the Illusion of matter, and the illusion of colour!

Any thoughts?

Despite the rampant contradictions throughout its an interesting read, although the author's "illusion of up and own" is incorrect, - "up" is the transverse direction from gravity, i.e. a direction perpendicular to, and away from, the surface of the earth relative to the position of the observer. "Up" is a conceptual notion of opposing gravity, and gravity (itself however an illusion) is a constant direction relative to the surface of the earth.

Similar to the illusion of time, up is relative to the observer, what is up here is not up there in a parallel direction (i.e. the two "ups" do not run as parallel lines), but up here is always up here, it is always a direction perpendicular to, and away from, the surface of the earth relative to the position of the observer.

Oddly enough the proposition in its basic form supports my earlier article on "you have no freedom of choice" and i have always thought that the concepts of colour, sound, taste, smell etc to be relative to the observer. i think Nicholas Cage said it best in 'City of Angels' when he said - "I know what a peach tastes like, but i don't know what a peach tastes like to you"

I like the whole "up" being conceptual thing. I have to admit that thinking in those "dimensions" is always fun, to toy with perceptions. An example which sticks in my mind is in Star Trek 2 where the enterprise is being followed, but where sight is not an available tool, to-wit instead of going forward.. they move "up"... thus making Khan... (KHAN!!.. sorry.. carried away there for a mo.. lol)... fly underneath, and thus enabling them to "drop" back in behind them and create a surprise attack . What is really missing from this though is they lacked the imagination to place the ships in any perspective other than "upright" ie horizontal, if you get what i mean lol.

As for no freedom of choice, thats an interesting can of worms... especially for those who believe that "God" knows all, because if it is already known what is going to happen, then it is predetermined by proxy! Although, if you examine time, and consider that there is an infinite amount before and beyond us, the concept of past and future cannot exist, only now, and now,.... and now...! lol
