THE DESTRUCTION OF COVENTRY CATHEDRAL
BY ENEMY BOMBERS ON 14 NOVEMBER 1940
The Germans switched their attention on 14 November 1940, from London, first to Coventry and then on to Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton, Sheffield, Merseyside and Manchester. They all suffered major air-raids in the final weeks of 1940.
The beginning of the blitz on September 7 1940, was in retaliation for the British raid on Berlin two weeks before, when 129 RAF bombers attacked, of course these raids were pretty minute in comparison with the British thousand bomber raids on Germany later in the war.
On the night of 14/15 November 1940, a devastating German air-raid on Coventry took place, a total of 449 bombers were involved, and they destroyed much of the heart of Coventry. One third of houses were made uninhabitable, there were 1100 casualties, many fatal, 21 factories were destroyed, as was the city's Cathedral.
Many more air-raids took place over Britain during November 1940, a large number were heavy, and resulted in the death of 4588 civilians, with 6202 injured.
