On 29 December 1940 a heavy incendiary raid took place mainly on what is known as the City area of London. Many historic buildings were destroyed, two factors made a major contribution to the widespread damage, one the tide on the river Thames was very low, and the fire services ran out of water. Secondly the raid took place on a Sunday night, and amazing as it may seem up to that time, fire watching did not occur over weekends [After this raid changes were made and firewatching was in place seven days a week]
On 13/14 March 1941 a heavy raid took place on Clydebank near Glasgow in Scotland, 35.000 out of 47.000 inhabitants were made homeless. There were also three major raids on Cardiff Wales, five on Portsmouth and two on Plymouth.
