
The public were bombarded by slogans, such as "dig for victory" "make do and mend" "coughs and sneezes spread diseases" "post before noon" The Ministry however soon became aware of the consequences of ill-planned or unnecessary publicity, it was counter productive.
In May 1941 the Ministry of Information refused to undertake an appeal by the Petroleum Board for a voluntary reduction in petrol consumption, on the grounds that the public expected administrative action to reduce the rationed petrol allocation. The ration in fact was gradually reduced without public complaint and allocation ended for private motorists in March 1942.
