Human hands certainly provide a ready source of nutritional factors that permit bacteria to survive and flourish. In everyday life this is probably of little importance, but in hospital, with their nasty bugs {the NHS has one of the worst records in the Western world} and susceptible patients it is a very different matter.
Despite repeated campaigns to encourage the practice of hand-washing, doctors and nurses seldom do so, some experts suggest that a radical solution would be, that on admission to hospital patients should be informed of the importance of hand-washing, to reduce infection rates. So patients need to remind doctors and nurses of the necessity to wash their hands, what a pathetic state of affairs.
