Four days after the commencement of the Flying bomb [V1] offensive, the War Cabinet were informed that these attacks had led to a serious loss of sleep amongst the population effected [mainly southern England] together with no real relaxation of strain, this made parents anxious for the safety of their children. It was considered that after 5 years of war civilians were not as capable of standing the strain of sustained air attacks, and if the V1's were supplemented by rocket attacks [V2's], there might be a serious deterioration in the morale of the population.

The V1 attacks were supplemented by the V2's and together they caused very heavy casualties and a deterioration in morale, fortunately, the raids only lasted for 9 months [ the Allied advance through Europe overrunning the launching bases] and the potential catastrophe was avoided.

There were already thoughts in 1944 that with victory in sight, the end of the Ministry of Information's purpose was near. In March 1945 Churchill was asked for permission to dismantle the department, the Prime Minister refused and ordered that the Ministry continue at a reduced scale until the defeat of Japan, it lingered on until March 1946, when the new Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced the formation of the Central Office of Information.
