VE DAY THEY CELEBRATE IN THE FOUNTAINS OF LONDON'S TRAFALGAR SQUARE

May 8 was proclaimed VE [victory in Europe] day and broadcasts by both the King and Winston Churchill brought about a momentous occasion of relief and rejoicing for the people of Britain.
Immense crowds gathered in Whitehall central London, surging around the Prime Minister's open car after, broadcasting, he left Downing Street to go to the House of Commons. Just before 6p.m. he came out on the balcony of the Ministry of Health, and to the happy and orderly crowd below, said in response to the ovation that met him " This is your victory" Words echoed back from the thankful people of Britain to their great war leader.
In the early afternoon of VE day crowds swarmed outside Buckingham Palace, shouting "we want the King". In response to the cheers , Their Majesties with the Princesses appeared on the balcony accompanied by Mr Churchill.
Bonfires were a feature of VE day celebrations. In many places fireworks mysteriously appeared, and Hitler effigies were burned, while searchlights combed the skies, but not for enemy planes.
