The British Medical Association is to call on all patients to sign a petition in support of their GP's as part of a major campaign against proposals to introduce large surgeries called polyclinics. Changes could lead to the creation of 150 health centres and polyclinics designed to offer extra services such as minor surgery and dentistry.
The BMA warns that polyclinics will damage GP services , fragment patient care and lead to the closure of many small practices. As usual the BMA have their heads in the sand, to start with they have presided over the diminution of GP services, very often patients these day are not seeing their own doctor, but another within the practice. If they are ill after "office hours" with a bit of luck, they will be visited by a locum doctor.
Sadly GP services can hardly get worse, so why not bring on the super surgeries, hopefully they might operate longer hours and have a greater range of services. The truth is that in many cases these days GP's are just referral agents. Could it be that the BMA are scared to admit that improvements would be welcome, of course that would be accepting that not all is well with the GP service.
