A schoolgirl aged 12 was held by police for more than an hour on suspicion of shoplifting. The girl painted her thumbnail with a peach-coloured varnish at a branch of Boots in Folkestone Kent.
The young girl said "I went into the shop and saw a nail polish, which I thought looked all right. There were no testers so I put a tiny bit on my thumb-nail. The security guard walked up behind me and said I had to pay for it or it would be theft" " I was really scared. I had no money on me so he said I had to come into the office. The girl's parents arrived on the scene and paid for the varnish, and pledged never to return to the shop.
The reality of the situation is that the girl who admitted she had no money, opened up a bottle of nail varnish, using it as a tester, therefore making the item unsaleable, whether she intended leaving the shop with it we will never know, but at best it was an act of vandalism, she should have known better. Her parents instead of directing their anger towards the shop, should be admonishing their daughter for her unacceptable behaviour.
