  GERMAN TROOPS ENTER POLAND

April 3 1939 "Should Poland adopt a threatening attitude towards the Reich, we may be driven to a final settlement, not withstanding the existing pact with Poland " [ On September 1 1939 German troops invade Poland]

April 19 1939 " Well, if England wants war she can have it. It will not be an easy war as they like to think, nor a war fought in the way the last one was . It will be a war of such destructiveness as no one has imagined. How can the English imagine what a modern war will be like when they are incapable of putting two fully equipped divisions in the field"

August 20 1939 " In my opinion it is desirable. in view of the two states [Germany and the Soviet Union] to enter a new relationship and not to loose any time" [ On August 23 1939 a Nazi-Soviet pact came into effect. The parties agreed not to fight each other. Secret protocols provide for the partition of Poland and for the USSR to operate freely in the Baltic States, Finland and Bessarabia]

October 6 1939 " I believe even today that there can be real peace in Europe and throughout the world if Germany and England come to an understanding "

March 5 1941 " It must be the aim of the collaboration based on the Three-Power Pact [Germany Italy and Japan] to induce Japan as soon as possible to take active measures in the Far East. Strong British forces will thereby be tied down and the centre of gravity of the interests of the United States will be diverted to the Pacific "
