 GERMAN MECHANISED UNITS DRIVE FORWARD

IN THE ARDENNES
December 12 !944 "America tries to become England's heir. Russia tries to gain the Balkans. Even now these states are a loggerheads. If now we can deliver a few more blows, then any moment this artificially bolstered common front may suddenly collapse with a gigantic clap of thunder. It is essential to deprive the enemy of his believe that victory is certain "

On December 16 1944 in the Ardennes[Luxembourg and Belgium]. the German Army launches it ill fated offensive [The Battle of the Bulge]

December 28 1944 " The enemy has had to abandon all his plans for attack. He has had to throw in units that were fatigued. His operational plans have been completely upset. As much as I may be tormented by worries, nothing will make the slightest change in my decision  to fight on till at last the scales tip to our side. we shall then smash the Americans completely. Then we shall see what happens. I do not believe that in the long run the enemy will be able to resist 45 German divisions. We shall yet master fate.

The Battle of the Bulge ended on the 16 January 1945 when the Germans had been pushed back to where they started. 80.000 Allied troops were lost [mostly American] The Germans lost 110.000 troops.
